Description


The Emerging Research Leaders' Development Programme (ERLDP) has been designed for postdoctoral researchers/research staff aspiring to achieve research independence in order to lead their own research group and/or to become research leaders in their field through a variety of career pathways including academia. It is a unique opportunity for you to develop and reflect upon your personal leadership style in the context of those who you lead in either an official or unofficial capacity. We will provide tailored training workshops and one-to-one coaching sessions so you can develop solutions relating to your current situation and your future needs. Attending participants will also have access to online resources and a mid-programme masterclass.

Workshop 1 (full day): Introduction to the programme; Exploring leadership assumptions in the current context of higher education and industry; The importance of self-leadership; Getting the most out of the coaching process

Workshop 2 (half day): Leading others collaboratively

Workshop 3 (half day): A strategic approach to career management

End of Programme Presentation and Networking Event (three hours): You will be presenting to key internal and external stakeholders about your learnings' from being a participant on the programme.

Target audience
  • Postdoctoral researchers/research staff in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine and Mathematics (STEMM) disciplines
  • To be eligible for the programme, it is expected that you will have applied or are aiming to apply for independent research funding and that you are currently responsible for managing/supervising students (officially or unofficially). You also need to demonstrate your motivation for wanting to be a participant on the programme.
Prerequisites

It is essential that selected participants are able to commit to attending all the 4 workshops as scheduled and commit to completing all elements of the programme.

Aims


This programme has been designed to help you:

  • to explore your understanding of ‘leadership’ and assess the impact of this understanding on your current actions and behaviours;
  • to provide you with relevant tools, techniques, models and theories to engage in ‘self-leadership’ as the starting point for leading others collaboratively and your career management;
  • to build your confidence and to help you to realise your full potential.

  • Your application to attend the programme will not be considered until we have received a copy of this application form
  • Successful applicants will be contacted in early - mid April
  • Please note that places are limited and may be offered subject to a short pre-programme interview with Dr Sharon Saunders
Feedback
  • In 2013, 88.3% of participants rated the overall programme ‘excellent’ and 11.7% rated it ‘very good’
  • Participants found the coaching sessions useful in helping them to consolidate their learning and understand how they could apply some of the techniques and theories in their current working environment

About the Programme Director
  • Dr Sharon Saunders' research interests centre on how knowledge about leadership is produced in order to inform leadership development interventions
  • Her own career story spans two continents and tells of both academic and professional roles in a wide range of organisations and settings meaning she has a wide range of perspectives and experience to draw upon
Duration
  • One full day workshop, two workshops of three hours and a two hour masterclass (date to be advised)
  • Three hour end of programme presentation and networking event
  • Three one hour coaching sessions with a professional coach (dates to be negotiated on an individual basis).
  • It is expected that all participants will commit to an additional six hours to complete additional tasks and activities during the programme
