A very high proportion of accidents reported to the Safety Office from around the University involve sharps of one sort or another. In this module we will look at how you can reduce hazards when working with glass and sharps.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Identify potential sharp hazards in your environment
- Describe appropriate control measures when working with blades
- Describe appropriate control measures when working with glass
- Describe appropriate control measures when working with needles and cannulas
- Follow safe disposal practices
- Follow the first aid procedures when dealing with a sharps injury
This module will take 30-40 minutes to complete. At the end of the module there is an activity to review what you have learnt.

An on-demand online training course that explains what to consider when assessing the risk of work with genetically modified organisms (GMOs), requirements for notification to the HSE and how to assign the appropriate activity class and containment level for your work.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Describe which regulations govern the University’s work on GMOs.
- Follow the appropriate approval processes for proposed GM work.
- Propose suitable steps to reduce or control the hazards of GM work.
- Complete a GM risk assessment form using appropriate sources for information.
This module will take approximately 90 minutes to complete.
