A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Simplifying our Processes team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys

The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

PLEASE NOTE The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching as many courses live online, with tutors available to help you work through the course material on a personal copy of the course environment. We aim to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout.

This course covers concepts and strategies for working more effectively with Python with the aim of writing reusable code, using function and libraries. Participants will acquire a working knowledge of key concepts which are prerequisites for advanced programming in Python e.g. writing modules and classes.

Note: this course is the continuation of the Introduction to Solving Biological Problems with Python; participants are expected to have attended the introductory Python course and/or have acquired some working knowledge of Python. This course is also open to Python beginners who are already fluent in other programming languages as this will help them to quickly get started in Python.

Are you a Team Owner? This course teaches how to manage your team effectively and answers the many questions that you will have. Please note that the course is taught using Microsoft Teams and you must have Teams installed on your computer to participate.

You will:

• Learn how to create teams, channels and add members
• Practice configuring settings for your team and its members
• Have the opportunity to ask questions about team management

The RD team are offering one-to-one meetings online over the coming weeks for all postdocs. These meetings will be tailored to your individual needs and provide an opportunity to consider and discuss topics relating to learning, skills and personal development. This is not an exhaustive list but topics may include a variety of issues including:

• Managing your time whilst working from home
  

• Collaborating effectively

• Maintaining resilience and coping strategies

• Reflecting on and identifying your key areas for development

Each meeting will last for up to 45 minutes and, given the present circumstances relating to Covid-19, will be conducted online using Teams or Zoom.

Green Labs has teamed up with Eppendorf to provide refresher training on cold storage best practice for you to apply to your own lab.

• What do we need from sample storage?
• How do Ultra Low Temperature (-70, -80) freezers provide appropriate conditions?
• How should you operate your freezers to best protect your samples?

Content delivered will not be promotional and staff who use other brands are equally encouraged to attend.

A similar event was run in-person in 2019. This one will be delivered online via Microsoft Teams and is not space limited, so your whole lab should sign-up and attend too!

Please note: this course was formerly called 'Effective Undergraduate Supervision'.

This course prepares you to supervise undergraduate students at the University of Cambridge in AHSS subjects. It explores the challenges and approaches involved in supervising undergraduates as well as providing practical advice and strategies.

The course consists of three components:

1. A pre-workshop self-paced module containing information on the Cambridge supervision system and introduces the principles and practices of effective teaching.

2. A live online workshop that incorporates personal reflection on teaching practice, discussion of real teaching scenarios, a chance to discuss and ask questions and access to practical information about organising and carrying out your supervisions.

3. A post-workshop information pack containing additional resources for ongoing support and information

The training provided in this course complements any training you may receive from your department or college and is required by colleges before you can carry out supervisions.

A thorough awareness of issues relating to research ethics and research integrity are essential to producing excellent research. This session will provide an introduction to the ethical responsibilities of researchers at the University, publication ethics and research integrity. This session will be accessed online. Instructions will be sent once your book your place.

A relaxed one-to-one practice speaking session VIA MS TEAMS with chance to concentrate on your conversational and pronunciation skills on a one-to-one basis.

This one hour workshop is for people who are either new to an Office application or for more experienced users who wonder if there is a better approach to how they are currently completing their work. We don't promise solutions for every problem but we will work with you using your files to explore if we can suggest a more efficient way to achieve results.

When you book, in the Special Requirements field, please enter a description of what you want to discuss and, if relevant, have a copy of your own files available so we can test some ideas. Please anonymise the data if it is sensitive or personal.

Delivered in a safe and supportive environment, this session offers individuals the opportunity to learn about the different factors that might create and perpetuate a work environment in which harassment and bullying occur, and strategies for how to address this.

Over the past year, ourcambridge has worked with professional services staff from across the University to develop a set of core values that underpin the way we work. The values that you chose together were: Trust, Respect, Integrity and Collaboration. Embedding these as part of our culture means truly living them in the way in the way we work, through our actions and behaviours.

This focus group provides the opportunity for you to share your ideas for practical ways in which we can bring these values to life in our daily work. We will discuss the types of initiatives, tools and resources that individuals, managers, and teams may find most useful for promoting and embedding these new values. The focus group will be formed of 6 colleagues using Microsoft Teams.

The sessions will be led by Fatima Baldo, Jenny Rampling and Freya Villis, Senior Programme Co-ordinators

If you are considering applying for an early career fellowship (postdoc fellowship and/or career development fellowship), this is the event for you. Dr Candace Hassall, Head of Researcher Affairs at the Wellcome Trust, will share insights gained from working for one of the UK’s top funders of academic research and from sitting on a range of selection panels for research funding. You will learn which questions to ask yourself both when thinking about applying and when preparing your application. Her advice is general and relevant to all disciplines.
