All courses offer general language tuition with a focus on communicative competence and where possible elements of scientifically relevant content.
At Absolute Beginners level, the focus is on every day and real-time, oral/aural communication. The course features a functional-notional syllabus and grammar points are analysed in context.
Please note that the descriptors below relate to the full 30 hrs course. You are now enrolling in the introductory part (1st third, 10hrs) of the whole course.
All members of the University (please note that the courses will feature some scientific content).
For absolute beginners (ab initio learners)
The Course introduces students to the following functions and notions:
- How to say hello, introduce themselves, to tell their origin, age and ask people relevant questions to get same information.
- To converse about family and languages spoken.
- To say where they live, give/ask for address; ask/explain who people live with.
- To talk about preferences, interests, sport, hobbies, weekend activities.
- lTo place orders at the bar or in a café, talk about likes, dislikes, ask people what they want to drink; ask for the bill.
- Listening/Speaking
Understand some basic instructions and take part in a brief informal conversation on a predictable topic.
- Reading
Understand a set of basic notices and instructions.
- Writing
Write a brief informal e-mail on a predictable topic.
- To develop a basic understanding and an appreciation of the salient linguistic features;
- To enable the learner to communicate in a range of predictable every-day situations;
- To introduce students to the cultural background within the context of language learning.
Face-to-face, classroom teaching and multimedia online resources (Moodle).

- Students Fees: £100 to be paid online. Please select ‘Concessionary’ under the course fee when you make your booking.
- Postdocs/Staff Fees: £110 to be paid online. Please select ‘All charged’ under the course fee when you make your booking.

Ten taught lessons (50 minutes) plus online learning. Total commitment expects 10 lessons + 15 hrs of self-study.
