Recruitment Essentials: Appointing the Right Candidate (Academic Appointments)

This workshop provides an opportunity for academic staff to understand the recruitment and selection process and how to create the conditions where you can recruit the best candidate and avoid common pitfalls. It includes an overview of the recruitment and selection process and identifies the key principles to ensure practice is fair to all candidates at each stage.

The course is primarily aimed at academic staff involved in making selection decisions for academic roles and those with responsibility for coordinating academic recruitment procedures.

Target audience

It is recommended that delegates complete the following before attending the session:

  • to enable you to create the conditions where you can recruit the best candidate
  • to understand the importance of using a fair and transparent recruitment and selection process
  • to recognise the impact of implicit bias and ensure it does not affect selection decisions
  • to understand the shared responsibility of the selection committee to ensure a fair process is followed

The workshop is interactive and encourages discussion around current practice. The learning is sustained by providing an opportunity to plan your course of action to ensure training is applied back in the workplace

'This (briefing session) was very enabling … and the process of reflection was very useful. I realised things about previous recruitment experiences that I wouldn’t have realised otherwise'
'Excellent – nice views but discussion interesting enough not to look outside'

Participants will be asked to read the University's Recruitment Guidance policies before the session
