This programme is designed to support academic, research and professional service leaders and managers with the skills and insights they need to lead others effectively. It will enable participants to reflect on their current leadership style and provide techniques they can use to effectively manage a diverse range of perspectives and create an inclusive culture across the University. Those with responsibility for others have a key role to play in shaping a positive working environment, supporting progression and ensuring equality, including pay equality. Given the University's strategic priorities, it is critical that leaders and managers understand the impact of their decisions throughout the employment timeline and know how to reduce the risk of sex, race or other discrimination, whether explicit or implicit.

The programme is delivered in partnership with Pearn Kandola, experts in evidence-based inclusive leadership development.

Induction: Online Self-taught Bookable


This online course welcomes new staff to the University and provides key information to help them settle into their new role quickly and achieve their full potential within their role as soon as possible. It will give new staff an overview of the University, including what to expect from induction and essential information along with some background on the history and traditions.

This online course complements the local induction new staff will receive in their institution, department or faculty.

Mentoring can be a really useful tool in helping people to develop their professional lives and careers, in both roles of mentor and mentee.

This interactive workshop is designed to give an overview and introduction to mentoring, informing participants about what mentoring is, giving them the opportunity to explore the key benefits for mentors and mentees, learn some key skills needed to both mentor and be mentored effectively and become familiar with some simple models, tools and techniques to support the mentoring partnership and maximise its value and impact.

Effective risk management enables the University to identify, assess and seize opportunities which assist in the delivery of its objectives and improve its performance, whilst protecting the reputation and sustainability of the University. This interactive tutorial provides an introduction to the principles of risk management at the University of Cambridge. This course will enable you to identify the important ingredients for a successful team and to reflect on your own team management skills. It will also look at different team-working styles and examine the need to balance the requirements of the task, the team and the individual.


For many people having challenging conversations can be difficult and feel uncomfortable; however the ability to be able to talk about sensitive and emotive issues is an integral part of effective line management and can be critical to managing performance, promoting attendance and improving team dynamics.

This module will give you some practical steps to help you handle these conversations better and, where possible, get the right outcome for you, the individual and the University.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is the most widely used personality instrument worldwide, based on over 50 years’ research and development.

It presents a framework for understanding how you operate, how others operate, and how you can use that understanding to get more from yourself and the relationships you have with others.

This workshop is led by a qualified MBTI practitioner and will involve taking the MBTI questionnaire, investigating the four areas of preference covered by MBTI, self-assessment of type with group exercises, looking at your best fit type and investigating how it could help you at work.

Learning about your personality type can help you to understand your role within your team and the role of others. It can also help you to cope with organisational change, deal with stress effectively and develop your emotional intelligence.


Minute taking is not usually about writing a verbatim record of what is said but it is about understanding why minutes are required and recognising what is important to record.

This module is an introductory guide for anyone who is required to take minutes. It does not cover the additional skills required to take minutes at University committee meetings.

If you dread giving presentations or simply want to hone your skills, this workshop gives you an opportunity to ‘step up to the podium,’ and receive constructive feedback and coaching to be a better public speaker. Whatever your specific speaking goal might be - delivering a presentation to colleagues, chairing or engaging in a meeting, giving a toast or tribute, or responding confidently in a Q&A period – the supportive environment of this workshop will help you play to your strengths, face your fears and give you tools to overcome them.

You may find it useful to have completed the Presentation Skills online module before attending the session.

If you would like to refine your speaking style, increase your personal impact, or address any concerns you may have about your communication skills, these sessions are aimed at identifying the areas you need to focus on, from how you shape an interesting and effective presentation to how you deliver it, and any point in between.

One-to-one coaching:

  • Please only book one session at a time.
  • It is possible to book a follow-up session for additional support; the course trainer will advise when this may be helpful.
  • Please note that administration and delivery cost for a 1:1 session is significant. Late cancellation or non-attendance costs the University and also prevents another employee from receiving this specialist support.

New small group coaching:

  • Up to 4 colleagues may attend up to 3 sessions together, spread over a few weeks/months.
  • Please book up to 3 of the 1:1 sessions on any date/time (booking under the same lead name) and then email ppd@admin.cam.ac.uk with the names of the additional attendees in the group.

Presentation Skills: Online Self-taught Bookable


Do you dread speaking in public or giving presentations? Or are you looking to build on your current skills and experience to make your planning and delivery more effective? This module aims to develop your skills, knowledge and confidence in both formal and informal presentation situations e.g. meetings, training sessions and conferences.

This online module provides an opportunity to explore key areas in both preparation and delivery of presentations.

The University has a statutory duty to have ‘due regard to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism’. This is known as the Prevent Duty (Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015). It is primarily about safeguarding students and staff in the University and includes a range of responsibilities in areas such as pastoral care, support for staff and students, procedures for arranging events and using facilities. All staff need to be aware of the process of radicalisation, definitions of extremism and the process for raising concerns in this context.

This online learning module (approx. 45 minutes) provides information about Prevent for all staff working in the University. It is to be used alongside the guidance information, including how to raise a concern in this context, on the University Prevent website.

A new three part programme to support career progression for Professional Services staff:

Part 1

This highly interactive workshop will enable you to step back from the ‘day-to-day’ and focus on your career objectives, short and long term. You will have the opportunity to explore what development opportunities you could grasp and what networks might assist you. You will also have the opportunity to consider what’s holding you back and how you can overcome these barriers to fulfill your career aspirations. You will leave the workshop with a personal career plan in draft format, that you will be able to explore in greater depth during the second part of the programme.

Part 2

An hour-long one-to-one career coaching session provided by a professional career coach from Penna, to take place on 6th, 7th, or 8th July. The booking link will be circulated for participants on the afternoon of Thursday 25th June. If you do not receive the booking link on that date please contact PPD.

Part 3

Access to an Online Career Development Tool designed to further support career development and progression. The tool enables you to assess your skills and behavioural attributes against the levels required for your current role, and for roles that you may wish to progress into in the future. It also identifies areas for professional development to support your career development. Guidance on accessing and using the tool will be sent to you at the end of the month in which you attend the workshop.

You will apply a number of tools to real life situations and leave with a clear understanding of the major management issues and the basis of a clear and workable project plan.

Recommended for those responsible for the recruitment and selection of staff, who are interested in developing further skills in this area. This course prepares you to effectively carry out the recruitment and selection process taking you through the stages of producing a person specification, short listing effectively against selection criteria, designing questions, structuring and conducting interviews, and making the final decision. University policies and procedures will also be covered.


This workshop provides an opportunity for academic staff to understand the recruitment and selection process and how to create the conditions where you can recruit the best candidate and avoid common pitfalls. It includes an overview of the process and identifies the key principles to ensure practice is fair to all candidates at each stage.

This programme will include detailed information on occupational pensions, financial advice and planning, tax and legal issues, as well as the emotional and practical issues accompanying retirement. The University must ensure that there are appropriate arrangements in place to promote effective risk management; this is a condition of grant under the terms of the Financial Memorandum between the HEFCE and the Higher Education Institutions it funds.

This course will explore what risk management is and why it is necessary, and the particular benefits that can be derived from effective risk management. A key focus of the course will be to review the University’s system for risk management and to explore how this system can be implemented at the local level of Faculties and Departments.

After the storm: how professional services staff should respond to the transformed HE landscape

For those who have been working in higher education for some time as well as those who are new to the sector it can feel like a really fast-moving and challenging environment. Change is constant and getting more rapid and less predictable all the time. This session will look at how professional services staff can respond to this transformed landscape and the approaches and attitudes we will need to adopt to survive and thrive. It won’t be all doom and gloom though as we will explore some of the lighter aspects of sector life too.
