This course is recommended for those responsible for the recruitment and selection of staff and those with HR responsibilities.

With Brexit, and the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020, the UK government intends to launch a new immigration system from 1 January 2021. This system will apply to all non-UK nationals entering the UK for the first time, and non-EEA nationals already resident in the UK who are seeking to extend their existing visas.

The new system is loosely based on the existing immigration system, but with some changes. The aim of this course is to help those involved with recruitment and selection to navigate the new rules which regulate the recruitment of individuals who are subject to immigration control, whilst ensuring full compliance. The course will also outline other key visa routes such as Global Talent and Tier 5.

Increase your confidence and skills in one-to-one communication with this highly participative course. Effective communication starts in your head and it isn’t just about the words you say. Your tone of voice, facial expression and body language all communicate a message. This course will help you get your message across more clearly. You will also have the opportunity to practise communication skills on a one-to-one basis.


This online course offers a short introduction to data protection concepts, explains why they are important to the University, and signposts to further guidance materials. As nearly all University staff are likely to collect and handle personal information about living identifiable individuals in one way or another, it’s important to have a basic understanding of the main issues.

All staff using personal data in some way in their role are encouraged to complete this online course once every two years, but the precise expectations about who should complete it (and how often) in different areas of the University should be set by Heads of Department (and equivalents).

The content of this course reflects the provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation as well as related data protection law.

Given the University's strategic priorities, it is critical that leaders and managers understand the impact of their decisions throughout the employment timeline and know how to reduce the risk of sex, race or other discrimination, whether explicit or implicit.

The programme is delivered in partnership with Pearn Kandola, experts in evidence-based inclusive leadership development.

The programme incorporates tutor input; opportunities for discussion, reflection and sharing of good practice with others with similar responsibilities. Presentation Skills: Online Course Self-taught Bookable


Do you dread speaking in public or giving presentations? Or are you looking to build on your current skills and experience to make your planning and delivery more effective? This course aims to develop your skills, knowledge and confidence in both formal and informal presentation situations e.g. meetings, training sessions and conferences.

This online course provides an opportunity to explore key areas in both preparation and delivery of presentations.


The University has a statutory duty to have ‘due regard to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism’. This is known as the Prevent Duty (Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015). It is primarily about safeguarding students and staff in the University and includes a range of responsibilities in areas such as pastoral care, support for staff and students, procedures for arranging events and using facilities. All staff need to be aware of the process of radicalisation, definitions of extremism and the process for raising concerns in this context.

This online module (approx. 45 minutes) provides information about Prevent for all staff working in the University. It is to be used alongside the guidance information, including how to raise a concern in this context, on the University Prevent website.

Managing and leading projects is a key skill, and yet it is often poorly understood and actioned; leading to projects that overrun, overspend or overwork the delivery teams.

This online course will provide you with a complete toolkit of project management skills (distilled from a number of sound project management “methodologies”) and an overview of various project planning techniques. The course has been developed to help you focus on a project you are actively involved in (or one that is about to commence). You will apply a number of tools to real life situations and leave with a clear understanding of the major management issues and the basis of a clear and workable project plan.

Recommended for those responsible for the recruitment and selection of staff, who are interested in developing further skills in this area. This course prepares you to effectively carry out the recruitment and selection process taking you through the stages of producing a person specification, short listing effectively against selection criteria, designing questions, structuring and conducting interviews, and making the final decision. University policies and procedures will also be covered.


This workshop provides an opportunity for academic staff to understand the recruitment and selection process and how to create the conditions where you can recruit the best candidate and avoid common pitfalls. It includes an overview of the recruitment and selection process and identifies the key principles to ensure practice is fair to all candidates at each stage.

The course is primarily aimed at academic staff involved in making selection decisions for academic roles and those with responsibility for coordinating academic recruitment procedures.

This workshop provides an opportunity for those recruiting to professional services roles to update and refresh their understanding of the recruitment and selection processes at the University of Cambridge. It includes an overview of the current recruitment and selection process and how to create the conditions where you can recruit the best candidate, avoiding common pitfalls, whilst ensuring practice is fair to all candidates at each stage.

This follow up session is for those who attended the Senior Leadership Programme Level 2 in 2017/18, 18/19 and 19/20.

Following requests from previous participants for a follow-up six months after the programme, we now offer a follow up networking session in September for the current and previous two cohorts. The purpose of the session is to give all recent participants an opportunity to reflect on developments since undertaking the programme and to re-connect and network with their peers.

We are delighted that Graham Virgo, our Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) is able to join this session as the guest contributor, to update the group on key issues in his area and to answer any questions you may have.

This course is recommended for any members of faculties and departments who are involved in student administration. The University is required to ensure compliance with the responsibilities of its student sponsor licence, granted by the Home Office to provide visa sponsorship for international students. The aim of the course is to provide an overview of the immigration regulations affecting students, with a focus on the requirements for visiting students and the practicalities of supporting this activity within the Cambridge context.

In order to limit any tax and immigration exposure, Departments should currently be supporting the return/relocation to the UK of employees currently working remotely overseas as a direct result of Covid-19, wherever possible. Prioritisation should be considered for EU nationals who do not have settled or pre-settled status who might then need a visa if they are not resident in the UK by 31 December, given that the new immigration system will come into effect from 1 January 2021.
