Basic Quantitative Analysis (BQA-6)

Description

This module follows on from Foundations in Applied statistics, and will teach you the basics of common bivariate techniques (that is, techniques that examine the associations between two variables). The module is divided between lectures, in which you'll learn the relevant theory, and hands-on practical sessions, in which you will learn how to apply these techniques to the analysis of real data.

Techniques to be covered include:

  • Cross-tabulations
  • Scatterplots
  • Covariance and correlation
  • Nonparametric methods
  • Two-sample t-tests
  • ANOVA
  • Ordinary Least Squares (OLS)

For best results, students should expect to do a few hours of private study and spend a little extra time in the computer labs, in addition to coming to class.

Target audience
  • Postgraduate students and staff
  • Further details regarding eligibility criteria are available here
Prerequisites
  • You should have a reasonable knowledge of the basic statistical material covered in FiAS.
  • You will need a basic knowledge of Stata. If you haven't taken FiAS, and haven't learned Stata elsewhere, you have two options: (1) download the materials from "90-minute Stata" and work through them yourself; (2) email the SSRMC Administrator to ask whether a space is available for the first of the FiAS lab sessions, where Stata is introduced.
Format

This module is very popular, so we repeat it several times. Each module runs over 2 sessions, covers exactly the same material, and is at the same level.

Software

Stata

Assessment
  • Online quizzes are provided for you to check your own progress
  • There is an online open-book test at the end of the module
  • The test is compulsory for some students – please check with your Department
Reading List

Available on the module's Moodle page.

How to Book

Please complete the Basic Statistics Stream booking request form on the SSRMP website

Moodle

Moodle is the 'Virtual Learning Environment' (VLE) that the SSRMP uses to deliver online courses.

SSRMP lecturers use Moodle to make teaching resources available before, during, and/or after classes, and to make announcements and answer questions.

For this reason, it is vital that all SSRMP students enrol onto and explore their course Moodle pages once booking their SSRMP modules via the UTBS, and that they do so before their module begins. Links to the Moodle page, as well as access codes, can be found in the confirmation email once a booking has been made.

Moodle pages for modules should go live around a week before the module commences, but some may be made visible to students, earlier.

Duration

8 hours - 2 hours of morning lectures, and 2 hours of afternoon lab sessions, repeated over 2 days.
