Win research funding with a good Data Management Plan - for Chemistry PDRAs
PrerequisitesNew

Wed 1 Nov 2017

Description

Are you a post-doc (or a PI) at Chemistry applying for research grants or fellowships? Do you need to write a Data Management Plan (DMP) as part of your application but don't know how? Are you a post-doc (or PI) who is just interested in learning about writing data management plans? If so, this session is for you.

You will increasingly be required to write a DMP as part of your grant applications, but it is also useful to write one whenever you begin a research project, to help you plan how to manage your data effectively from the start.

During this session you will learn everything you need to know about data management plans:

  • What they are
  • Why they are suddenly required as part of grant applications
  • What to include in data management plans
  • Tools to help writing data management plans
  • See example data management plans from funders

Refreshments will be provided (tea, coffee, and biscuits).

Target audience
  • PDRAs in the Department of Chemistry.
  • PIs or other staff in the Department of Chemistry involved in research grant or fellowship applications.

Objectives

You will gain practical experience of how to write DMPs and understand why you should.

Previous participants have found it useful to learn about an online tool that helps them to write a DMP according to funder and other institution requirements, and to see example plans that are relevant to them and demonstrate best practice - all to maximise your chances of winning funds!

Here is an outline of what will be covered during the session.

Part 1: Introduction to data management plans:

  • Why?
  • What?
  • How?

Part 2: Introduction to DMPonline

  • Create a data management plan using an online tool.
  • Peer review your colleague’s data management plan.

At the end of the session you will understand:

  • Why funders require data management plans
  • What to write in data management plans
  • How to create them

You will also gain practical experience of using DMPonline.
