This session will help prepare you to begin your literature review. You will learn strategies for searching for relevant material, how to troubleshoot common search problems, and how to stay up to date with new publications in your field.

Please bring a laptop, tablet or other web-enabled devide with you to the session.

This session will develop skills that will help you get the most out of your literature review. From a foundation of effective search strategies, you will learn how to critically appraise academic literature, techniques for getting through sources quickly and evaluating their relevance, engaging with key material and beginning to write your literature review itself, as well as ensuring accuracy in your citations and references.

ARTstor Digital Library is the database for images. An image library for the Arts and Sciences of over a million digital images, ARTstor comprises images for education, research and teaching across multiple disciplines in the humanities and social sciences and sciences, including art, architecture, music, religion, anthropology, literature, history, American studies, Asian studies, and classical studies. This course will explore the content on offer in ARTstor, searching techniques, creating images groups and folders, using ARTstor images in presentations, and other tools available from the database.

The course is designed to be "hands-on", so you are warmly invited to bring along any current research topics, interests and queries.

Introduction to Bibliographic Searching in Theology and Religious Studies will give a brief overview of the issues of searching for publications in general, and follow this up with searching the specialist Theology and Religious studies bibliographic database ATLA.

An introduction to the use of the specialist Theology and Religious studies bibliographic database ATLA for undergraduates, providing information on how to make the most effective use of this resource; of particular relevance to those preparing or working on a dissertation and wanting to acquire wider bibliographic information on a specific topic.

The Department's books include almost all of the Library's pre-1900 books, and cover nearly every subject taught in the University. There are few black and white rules about copyright but there can be serious consequences for getting things wrong! This session will cover the basics of UK copyright law and how these impact researchers such as dealing with third party materials, seeking permissions and how to manage risk.

Many funders now require evidence of how researchers will manage the data they use and collect before funding is even released. Although this can seem like yet another piece of unnecessary paperwork, data management plans can actually make the research process much more efficient. This interactive session will encourage participants to think about the different elements of a plan and give them a chance to review existing plans to gather ideas they can use in their own work.

This session will look at the 'problem' of so-called predatory publishers. These firms regularly approach researchers via email to solicit manuscripts and conference papers and with the increased emphasis on publishing as a measure of success it can be easy to give into temptation. This session will look at whether these publishers are a problem, how to spot a potential predatory publisher or conference and the best action to take if you are approached.

Participants will first be given advice on producing slides, focusing on good design, accessibility, data presentation, and accessing Creative Commons licenced materials for their work. This session introduces participants to the importance of good referencing practices within their work, and how it promotes good academic integrity. The University of Cambridge’s position on plagiarism will be examined before moving on to a discussion around good referencing techniques (both by hand and using a reference manager), using the Harvard referencing style as an example. Participants will see a live demonstration of the reference management tool Zotero, and will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions or book a follow-up 1-2-1 session.

Metrics have long been used as an indicator of academic success and as a way to make key decisions. As the measurement of impact becomes increasingly important within academia there has been something of a backlash against trusting purely quantitative methods of assessment. The Responsible Metrics movement aims to ensure that metrics are used fairly alongside other measures to gather a true assessment of impact. This session will discuss what the Responsible Metrics movement is, why it was developed, its importance and how research staff can get involved.

An opportunity to visit the main University Library (UL) with other LLM students. The tour will include an overview of the UL's law collections, a visit to the Rare Books Room and information about searching for Official Publications and historical material.

Welcome to the Squire Law Library! This introductory tour is led by the Librarian, David Wills, and Enquiry Desk staff member, Lizz Edwards-Waller. The tour will include information about borrowing, copying and scanning material, a visit to the dedicated PhD work areas within the library, an overview of the library catalogue and an introduction to the extensive law collections available to you.

This session is part of our gaming-themed Moore Methods lunchtime series of talks.

A thirty minute introduction to the UL, aimed at those using our facilities and collections over the summer vacation period. An experienced member of staff will meet you in the Entrance Hall then lead you on a twenty minute tour of the UL,taking in the Locker Room, Open Bookstacks, Reading Room and West Room. Ten minutes are reserved after the tour for a question and answer session.

We'll look at academic tools like ORCID, Google Scholar and ResearchGate/Academia.edu, as well as an overview of some of the more popular social media platforms. We'll also have discussions around issues such as the risks of sharing research through these platforms and reaching wider audiences. We will also show participants how to flip these tools and use them to access research for their own work too.

One-to-one drop-in sessions for Public Health/EPI/Primary Care MPhil students to answer any questions about literature searching, or using referencing software. This course will help you understand how to critically evaluate medical research articles, with a particular emphasis on evaluating the reliability, trustworthiness, and applicability of an article in informing evidence-based practice and decision-making in a healthcare context.

We will send you the article in advance, and it is a prerequisite that you read it before attending the session, and bring a copy with you to class.

'An Introduction to Critical Appraisal' will help you understand how to critically appraise a Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT). Using the CASP Checklist the course covers samples and sample size, randomisation, bias, statistics, significance (P Values and Confidence Intervals) and relevance.

We ask that you read a paper that will be provided before you attend the session, in order for us to make the best use of the time together.

Health literacy is the ability to interpret and apply health information. Poor health literacy can result in exacerbated inequalities, inappropriate use of medication, and poor health outcomes.

This course will provide details and context of health literacy, raise awareness of its importance for healthcare practitioners, and discuss tools, resources, and techniques that will aid healthcare practitioners in communicating with patients and improving their health literacy.

A course specifically for University of Cambridge staff and students. Attendees will learn how to search medical/healthcare databases accessed with a Raven login (such as Medline and Embase) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography. This course is delivered at an introductory/refresher level, and assumes you have had no prior training in how to search databases.

All attendees are required to have a Raven login. NHS staff wanting to learn similar material should book onto our 'Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching' course instead.
