The Emerging Research Leaders' Development Programme (ERLDP) has been designed for you as a postdoctoral researcher/member of research staff aspiring to achieve research independence in order to lead your own research group and/or to become a research leader in your field through a variety of career pathways, including academia.


It is a unique opportunity for you to develop and reflect upon your personal leadership style in the context of those who you lead in either an official or unofficial capacity. We will provide tailored training workshops and one-to-one coaching sessions so you can develop solutions relating to your current situation and your future needs. Participants will also be encouraged to use the online resources provided, and find and share their own.

Workshop 1 (full day): Introduction to the programme; getting to know each other; self-leadership; the strategic academic (masterclass)

Between workshops 1 and 2: beginning the coaching process; completing activities to identify personal styles and preferences

Workshop 2 (full day): Leading others collaboratively: personal styles; leadership and management; negotiating and influencing

Between workshops 2 and 3: continuing coaching process, preparation for individual and group leadership activities for workshop 3

Workshop 3 (half day): A strategic approach to career management; managing yourself; practising your own leadership

End of Programme Presentation and Networking Event (two hours plus informal networking): reflecting on your learning from the programme; receiving your programme completion certificate

Target audience
  • Postdoctoral researchers/research staff in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine and Mathematics (STEMM) disciplines
  • To be eligible for the programme, you will have applied or be aiming to apply for independent research funding, and you will be currently responsible for managing/supervising students or others (officially or unofficially). You will also need to demonstrate your motivation for wanting to be a participant on the programme.
Prerequisites

It is essential that selected participants are able to commit to attending all the elements of the programme as scheduled

Aims


This programme has been designed to help you:

  • to explore your understanding of ‘leadership’ and assess the impact of this understanding on your current actions and behaviours;
  • to understand relevant tools, techniques, models and theories to enable you to engage in ‘self-leadership’ as the starting point for leading others collaboratively and for your career management;
  • to build your confidence and to help you to realise your full potential.

  • Your application to attend the programme will not be considered until we have received your online application form.
  • Successful applicants will be contacted on the email provided in the application form on or before Monday 4 April 2016;
  • Please note that places are limited (in 2015 there were 54 applications for 30 places) and selection may involve a short pre-programme interview with Rebecca Nestor or Anne Augustine, the programme directors. If you are not offered a place, you may be placed on a waiting list.
Feedback


In the 2015 end of programme evaluation survey, 82.8% of respondents felt that the programme had helped them deal with challenges they faced, and 96.6% of respondents would recommend the programme (96.7% survey response rate);

  • All respondents found the coaching sessions useful in helping them to consolidate their learning and understand how they could apply some of the techniques and theories in their current working environment;
  • One participant commented, “The coaching process was not what I thought at the outset - I was concerned about the potential for navel gazing - but is an enlightening method I would recommend to anyone.”
About the Programme Directors


Rebecca Nestor: Rebecca has 25 years’ senior experience working with groups and teams in higher education and the public sector, including the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. She facilitates awaydays and residentials, strategic planning sessions and action learning, and has delivered a range of management and leadership topics for academic, research and professional/support staff. She is qualified to offer personality profiling and team building using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Team Management Profile. Following a first degree in English Literature at Cambridge University (1985) Rebecca achieved a Master’s in Business Administration from the Open University in 2003. She is currently studying for the Master’s in Consulting and Leading in Organisations at the Tavistock.
Anne Augustine: Anne has a multi sector and international career spanning information technology, sustainable development and business psychology. Over the last few years she has worked as a leadership development and organisational consultant; as well as an innovation and partnerships manager for a regional economic development body. In this role she works with research institutions to accelerate local engagement, impact and commercialisation. Anne was educated at the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge and King’s College London. She is an EMCC-certified executive coach and group facilitator, and is accredited in psychometric personality tools (NEO PI-R, BPS Level A and B). Anne has professional interests in social psychology, design thinking and improvisational practice.

Duration
  • Two full day workshops and one workshop of three hours. Two-hour end of programme presentation and one-hour networking event;
  • Three one hour coaching sessions with a professional coach (dates to be negotiated on an individual basis);
  • It is expected that all participants will commit to an additional six hours to complete additional tasks and activities during the programme.
