Postdoc Academy Course: Being for Beginners
New

Tue 24 Jan, Thu 26 Jan, ... Thu 9 Feb 2023

Description

Do you sometimes feel worn down or worked up? Would you like to develop habits that help you navigate life with greater confidence and happiness?

This course is designed specifically for researchers to explore tools for enhancing self-awareness, managing stress and unwanted thoughts, and embracing enjoyment and positive change.

It provides guided opportunities to think about:

  • how we relate to our body, thoughts and feelings
  • finding connection with others, nature and time
  • practical ways to change our habits and patterns of thinking.

The six workshops explore concepts from various traditions and provide opportunities for focused self-reflection, enhanced using meditation skills.

These skills are for complete beginners and provide new approaches for those with more experience. No previous experience is required.

Target audience

Postdocs, PhD students

Privacy and self-reflection are prioritised - there are no breakout rooms, cameras are off and you are welcome to use another name. You are welcome to interact with the facilitator through the chat, at the end of the workshops, or through the feedback forms.

The course runs over three weeks, with two hour-long sessions each week.

Pre-recorded video/audio of the workshops are available to all who register for the series, alongside other wellbeing resources. Use these to catch up if you cannot attend or wish to repeat a workshop.

About the facilitator

The series is facilitated by anthropologist Roddy Bray. In 2020 Roddy developed a wellbeing series with DPhils and research staff at Oxford University to explore practical ideas and frameworks of wellbeing and facilitate opportunities to reflect.

The resulting series ‘Being for Beginners’ has proved very popular and has been used for students and staff across the University. His insights from various disciplines, his calm and kind manner and the effectiveness of his work have led to very strong impact data and positive feedback.
