Description

Introductory course to German. This course is for those with no previous knowledge of German. Communicative context, with videos, audio, texts and conversation.

Target audience
  • All staff and students from Cambridge University Engineering Department

Topics covered
  • Alphabet
  • Use of Questions
  • Word order
  • Definite and indefinite articles, plurals, negation of nouns
  • Present tense and past of 'haben' and 'sein', separable verbs
  • Cardinal and ordinal numbers, some prepositions
  • Modal verbs

  • Meet and greet people, introduce yourself (name, age, job, nationality, domicile)
  • Describe a room and its equipment
  • Talk about languages and countries
  • Describe a house/flat
  • Tell the time, make and cancel appointments
  • Talk about professions
  • Talk about food (shopping for food, likes and dislikes)
Objectives

Who for: absolute beginners, learners with very basic command of German.

Overview: An in-person course covering basic communication topics such as introducing yourself, small talk, talking about study and professions, hobbies, food and daily routine.

Aims

To be introduced to the German language with a focus on listening and speaking.

Format

Class work and individual study.

Duration

Nine sessions of two hours each taught over a period of two and half weeks.
