Drop In Sessions - Simplifying our Processes new Finished 09:00 - 10:00 CPMO: MS Teams

A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Simplifying our Processes team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

Legionella Awareness Training - City & Guilds (Level 2) Finished 09:00 - 16:00 Greenwich House, Edmonton Room

The Session covers detailed background and case studies of Legionella Bacteria and how it can colonise in domestic water systems. Overview of current legislation and guidance, monitoring and control measures, record keeping and escalation procedures.

This Course includes an examination.

Asbestos Awareness Training Finished 09:00 - 12:30 Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, LT2

This training will provide delegates with a basic knowledge of asbestos awareness, the risks and the legal requirements under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

Asbestos awareness training is mandatory for all University personnel meeting the prerequisites of the Asbestos Regulations and ACoPs (Accepted Codes of Practice). Training is typically required for personnel who could inadvertently disturb asbestos during the course of their work/activities or instruct someone to do so, eg personnel who work on buildings.

Induction for New Managers and Leaders at Cambridge new Finished 09:30 - 11:30 N/A - MS Teams


This short session will set the scene for those moving in to a role with professional responsibility for other members of staff at the University, supporting their work, behaviour and development. As we all know from our personal and professional experience, leaders and managers play a critical role in ensuring a productive, motivating and respectful working environment. The interactive session will explore what it means to be a good manager of others and provide pointers to where to find important information and further development as needed.

It is aimed at staff across all areas, disciplines, staff groups and levels of responsibility, including staff who are:

  • new to managing one or more others
  • new to leading a service or research area
  • new to Cambridge, either as a new manager or with previous experience
Virtual - How to Excel - Part 3 (For Finance staff) Finished 09:30 - 12:30 Via MS Teams

The session will look at more advanced formulas and macros using the recorder and VBA tools.

The formulas covered in this course include SUMIF and COUNTIF which will allow the user to quickly summarise data.

Macros will enable the user to automate tasks within excel. During this session, we will use the example of needing to analyse, sort, split and send data to specific email contacts. Users will be introduced to a series of macros to reduce this process to a few simple steps.

The session will run on Teams and delegates must be able to access Excel during the session

CHRIS - An Introduction (In Person Face to Face) Finished 09:30 - 12:30 University Information Services, Roger Needham Building, Ely Training Room 2

This course is an introduction to the CHRIS system and will cover an overview of key elements of the system that you will interact whilst undertaking HR tasks.

Introductory course to German. This course is for those with no previous knowledge of German. Communicative context, with videos, audio, texts and conversation.

General induction for users of the Physics of Medicine (PoM) building. This includes a guided tour of the facility.

The Programme offers general language tuition with a focus on communicative competence.

At a basic level, the focus is on every day and real-time, oral/aural communication. Each course features a functional-notional syllabus and grammar points are analysed in context.

In order to use machine learning methods on molecular data, it is necessary to express molecular structures in a form which can be used as the input. This workshop will outline ways in which this challenge has been addressed, including the InChI, SMILES, fingerprints and other ways of expressing molecules as text strings. The strengths and weaknesses of the various approaches makes them suitable for different applications. What will be most appropriate for the molecular problems you are tackling?

Apprenticeship Awards 2023 Finished 14:00 - 15:00 N/A - MS Teams

The Apprenticeship Awards celebrate the success of those who have achieved their apprenticeships, recognising those apprentices who have made a real difference to their workplace and used an apprenticeship to boost their career. It will also recognise the individuals who champion and promote apprenticeships in their school/department and across the University.

Apprenticeship Awards in 2023 will be made for the following categories:

• Apprentice of the Year – Intermediate and Advanced Levels 2&3

• Apprentice of the Year – Higher Levels 4&5

• Apprentice of the Year – Degree Levels 6&7

• Apprenticeship Champion

A special award will also be presented for the Rising Star, this will be for an apprentice that has made impressive progress in their career to date and have the potential to go even further.

Medicine: Research Data Management (for University and NHS) Finished 14:00 - 15:30 Cambridge University Libraries Online

There is an increasing emphasis in research on the management and sharing of data. Many funding bodies that support research undertaken at Cambridge require not only open access to any publications based on that research, but also to the data underlying it. This course will help you understand funders’ requirements for management and sharing of research data, and will provide opportunities to create your own data management plan and test out resources that will make the data management process easier.

Intercollegiate Forum: inclusive collegiate education and environments new Finished 14:00 - 17:00 Student Services Centre, Exams Hall, Room AG03d

Cambridge undergraduate education is distinctive, and Colleges as academic communities are key to students' educational experience. As Cambridge admits a more representative population of undergraduates, this Forum provides an opportunity to reflect on ways in which collegiate environments and collegiate education can contribute to all students’ becoming increasingly proficient in their learning, in managing curricular and extra-curricular commitments and in developing a sense of agency and ownership over their education.

The Forum is for College academic and professional staff and students, including (but not limited to) senior tutors and deputy senior tutors, directors of studies, supervisors, librarians, academic skills tutors, heads of wellbeing and JCR officers.

The Forum will include a panel of invited Cambridge and external contributors, as well as opportunities to share experiences and to reflect on ways of making positive differences to students’ experiences and outcomes in 2023-24 and beyond. The Forum is organised by the Cambridge Centre for Teaching & Learning as part of CCTL’s support for the collegiate University’s commitments to develop more inclusive educational environments and practices and to eliminate differentials in students’ assessment outcomes which cannot be explained through factors such as previous education and attainment (‘awarding gaps’).

Please note: this Forum provides an opportunity to extend discussions at an earlier Forum (‘First-year undergraduate academic induction and development’, 3 March 2023), during which we explored how first-year students begin to earn how to learn within a Cambridge context. However, our Forum in June is a self-contained occasion and there is no requirement to have taken part in the March meeting in order to participate in June.

CLIC: Spanish: Intermediate (Intensive) (1 of 9) Finished 16:00 - 18:00 Department of Engineering, CLIC 1

This course is suitable for students who have studied or picked up Spanish at basic level and who want to revise and progress onto intermediate topics and language and to discover Hispanic culture. The main focus is learning through communication and interaction. We will get together from home with Zoom, which offers us many possibilities to watch videos, listen to audio, read texts, write (there is even a whiteboard!) and especially speak in small and large groups. ¡Te esperamos!

Engaged Researcher - Creative Writing Finished 10:00 - 12:45 17 Mill Lane, Meeting Room A

Have you ever wanted to get creative with your research? To discover how writing can bring a new perspective to your work? How your words can engage with new audiences about the academic research that you are passionate about?

This training will enable you to develop creative ways by which you can use writing to engage with the public; providing you with the resources to be more confident in developing and sharing creative writing responses to your area of research.

The course will introduce creative writing for poetry and prose, and textual writing for exhibition / display. It will discuss developing writing for performance.  The aim is to work with you to bring out the creative responses that lay within your own work. There will be the opportunity to receive written feedback throughout the week, and to discuss your work in a 1-to-1 session with the course tutor (if requested in advance).

The training will be led by David Cain. David’s most recent book, Truth Street, was shortlisted for the prestigious Forward Prizes for Poetry (2019). David brings his writing experience together with a passion for public engagement - he currently leads the delivery of the Cambridge Festival.

Medicine: Systematic Literature Reviews - A 'How To' Guide (for University and NHS) Finished 14:00 - 16:00 Cambridge University Libraries Online

Before undertaking any piece of primary research it’s important to be aware of as much of the existing literature as possible. A systematic literature review can also be a research end in itself. And it’s not something to be taken lightly. But how can you be sure you’re being as rigorous as necessary? How can you manage the references you find, document the process, and also know when to stop searching?

This session assumes attendees have already had prior introductory training in literature searching. It is a prerequisite that you have attended either Introduction to Literature Searching (if you are a University of Cambridge staff member or student) or Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching (if you are an NHS staff member). Exceptions will be made if you received similar training from another department or university - please contact us if you have any questions about prerequisites.

The Academic Career Pathway (Teaching & Scholarship) has been introduced to recognise the contribution of colleagues whose primary responsibilities are teaching-focussed. This workshop provides an opportunity to learn of the aims and procedures of the new promotions processes for Teaching & Scholarship staff, to reflect on how scholarship may be evidenced in applications for promotions and to consider how to develop a personal case for promotion under the appropriate Scheme.

This workshop is intended to complement personal support for career development and promotions provided in departments, faculties and University institutions. We hope that it will also help you to identify specific questions about career development and personal promotions for discussion with your mentor, line-manager or colleague(s).
