The Chinese collections of Cambridge University Library are among the finest outside China, including inscribed oracle bones dating from the 13th century BC; over 200,000 printed monograph titles, the earliest of which dates from the 12th century AD, and about 3,000 serial titles; about 200,000 digital books; as well as manuscripts, paintings, rubbings and other artefacts. This session will provide a brief introduction to these collections and guidance on how to make the best use of them.

Before undertaking any piece of primary research it’s important to be aware of as much of the existing literature as possible. A systematic literature review can also be a research end in itself. And it’s not something to be taken lightly. But how can you be sure you’re being as rigorous as necessary? How can you manage the references you find, document the process, and also know when to stop searching?

If you need to do a systematic literature review, and you’re not able to make sense of the search strategy behind this paper then this course is for you. Please bring along details of your own topic so that the session can be tailored to address your specific needs.

This session is highly recommended for anyone new to the Pendlebury Library of Music. Even though the Newton Catalogue contains all records of items available for borrowing, limiting searches to specific media (e.g. CDs, DVDs or sheet music) can be counterintuitive. This session will demonstrate some search scenarios and also show how to recall and item which is currently on loan to someone else.

Archives and manuscripts are unique, often fragile and irreplaceable. To avoid damage and deterioration, they need to be handled with particular care. This session will offer a practical introduction to handling archives and manuscript material.

The UL's Rare Book collections include a range of high-quality subscribed online resources which contain a wealth of source material. This hands-on session designed specifically for Language and Literature students will introduce key online rare book resources for this field. You will also learn about the print research resources available within the Rare Books department. (Please note this session relates to early source material (pre-1900) and is not a general introduction to LibrarySearch or current article databases.)
