Engineering: Report Writing
Finished
Learn to identify the characteristics of a good report. From an accurate, concise and persuasive writing style to a well organised, well-presented layout and format. This workshop will help you understand the purpose of a report, how to plan it and how best to structure it in terms of presentation and layout. It will also offer 'good advice' on what you should (and should not) do. This session will develop skills that will help you with your first literature review of your PhD. From a foundation of knowing how to search for academic sources, you will learn about what to do if your search isn’t working out well, when you can stop searching and how to quickly get information from the sources you find. The following topics will be covered:
If you haven’t done a literature search before or would like a refresher, you might consider taking Information Skills 1A instead, which covers how to search for sources using academic databases. Please bring a laptop or other web-enabled device with you to the session. A handout for the session is available on Moodle if you would like to bring it with you, but it is not necessary. |

It’s okay, we’ll take you through what you need to know to make sure your research counts toward the Research Excellence Framework 2021. We will ask you to book a follow up session where you present something to us in a safe space using the tips and techniques discussed in the one to one and we will offer feedback. In this session, you will be introduced to the Pecha Kucha style of presenting, which has proved highly successful for PhD students talking about their research to a wider audience. If you are prepared to take up the challenge, you can then sign up for an individual training session. There will be opportunities to present, using this technique at the Science Festival next March on the 17th or 24th. |
