Raising Awareness of Neurodiversity in STEMM new Fri 3 Jul 2020   14:00 Finished

Neurodiversity includes the specific learning differences -dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and Autism.

In this talk Professor Sara Rankin explores the strengths and weaknesses associated with being neurodiverse and how this plays out in the Universities and businesses for students, researchers, managers, postgraduate students and administrators.

She will talk about some of the educational and outreach projects she is currently working on for ND students, at Imperial College London. She will also outline the steps that line managers can take to support their ND staff and give an overview of some of the assistive technologies that can help.

Sara Rankin is a Professor in NHLI, FoM working in the field of Regenerative Pharmacology. She is dyslexic and dyspraxic.

  • Introduce the Recruitment Policy, including the key principles that underpin good recruitment practice.
  • Explore how to write an effective recruitment advert, in terms of structure and content.
  • Present analysis of recruitment advertising at the University and suggest methods of effective advertising practice.

Talking about 'race' and racism is difficult as these issues are complex and rarely discussed particularly by White people. Our research and a number of national inquiries show that BAME staff and students experience racism more frequently than is reported.

Come along to this event to learn about the Collegiate and University systems that are in place to report and investigate racial discrimination. We will also discuss patterns in experiencing and reporting racism at the University and nationally.

This year, to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, Yvonne McPartland, Deputy Head of the Staff Counselling Centre, will be delivering a session on suicide prevention for staff in Cambridge.

The shocking reality is that suicide is the most common cause of death in men aged under 50 and the suicide rate is currently increasing after many years of decline. This equates to more than 6,000 deaths by suicide annually in the UK and Ireland.

What impact will Covid-19 have on suicide numbers?

The session is designed to give staff the confidence to challenge the taboo around suicide that makes it such a difficult subject to broach, with colleagues, family members, friends and even total strangers: what is it OK to say, what should I be looking for and what should I do next?

The session will increase awareness around suicide, dispel some myths and share some lessons from experience at the Staff Counselling Centre. It will also remind staff what the centre can offer them.

The message is that having a conversation could really save a life.
