Web Authoring: HTML - For Beginners (Level 1)

This is a practical-based course for people new to writing Web pages. Only the basics of HTML (hypertext mark-up language) will be covered, but there are other courses for those wishing to extend their knowledge. The course teaches how to write HTML from scratch using a basic Text Editor and focuses on content and structure as opposed to style. By the end of the course participants will have created four personal linked web pages and had the opportunity to publish these using DS-Web.

The course is suitable for anyone who is familiar with at least one Web browser e.g. Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox etc.

• The structure of HTML (tags, attributes and elements)
• Page titles
• The Head and Body Sections
• Annotating HTML
• HTML5 Semantic Elements
• The HTML Syntax
• Structural Tags inc <p> Paragraph and <div> Divisions
• Structural attributes of ID and Class
• Font Headings <h1> to <h6>
• Block element tags <ul> and <br>
• Lists <ul> <ol> <li>
• Links <a> to other webpages or websites
• Basic Images <img>
• Basic Tables <table> <tr> <th> <td>
• Uploading your personal web pages to DS-Web

Presentations followed by practical work

Notepad++, Internet Explorer and Firefox on MCS Windows

• The practical work will be done on PCs unless otherwise specified, although the course is platform independent and therefore suitable also for Mac and Linux users.
• If you would like to take away a copy of the Web page you create, please bring a USB memory stick. If you can logon to your MCS account, you will have an opportunity to set up your Web pages using DS-Web on that account.
