Description

Please join us for this 4 hour in-person workshop on Research Data Sustainability.

The workshop will aim to introduce awareness of the environmental costs of creating, storing and archiving research data. We will explore options for good research data management with a focus on reducing personal and institutional carbon footprint.

The venue is: Room NWG1-G3 Triangle Building, Cambridge University Press & Assessment, Shaftesbury Road Cambridge CB2 8EA

Lunch will be provided. Please ensure you let us know of any dietary needs or intolerances in this UTBS booking form.

Objectives

Outline of Workshop

Session 1: Impact This session will introduce the effect that various data-related activities can have on the climate and sustainability. With a focus on how storing and sharing data impacts the environment, and the magnitude of that impact. Speakers: Loïc Lannelongue, University of Cambridge and Andri Johnston, CUP&A

Session 2: Options This session will address some the different options available to researchers in terms of infrastructure and mechanisms for storing and sharing data. Speakers: Alicia Wise, CLOCKSS

Session 3: Preservation This session will go through some of the decisions researchers should consider when preserving their data. How to make preservation of information worthwhile and useful for the future. Speakers: Caylin Smith, Head of Digital Preservation, CUL.

There will also be some group activities with discussions.
