This is a City and Guilds accredited course which will provide delegates with an understanding of the risks and the legal requirements under the Approved Code of Practice Legionnaires' disease. The control of legionella bacteria in water systems 2013.

The course is designed to give participants an overview of the history and principles of the Lean methodology, and an explanation of some of the basic tools used to make improvements to processes. This session will provide some basic tools that can be used immediately to facilitate a continuous improvement way of working

This course is accredited with the LCS (Lean Competency System), a certificate will be provided on completion of a short assessment.

A good poster’s worth 1000 words… but a bad poster’s just a bit of messy paper. When it’s time for you to present your scientific poster how are you going to make the most of the opportunity? We’ll think about why we use posters to present our research, what makes the difference between a good and bad poster and some useful tips to help you present your data in style.

Are you a Team Owner? This course teaches how to manage your team effectively and answers the many questions that you will have. Please note that the course is taught using Microsoft Teams and you must have Teams installed on your computer to participate.

You will:

  • Learn how to create teams, channels and add members
  • Practice configuring settings for your team and its members
  • Have the opportunity to ask questions about team management

Peers support sessions offer the opportunity for mentors/mentees to come together and learn from one another in a safe space. The sessions are informal and designed to offer people the chance to share their experiences and talk over any challenges they may be having. Mentor and mentee sessions will be run separately. Anything discussed in the sessions should remain confidential.

We are offering this ‘taster’ session to provide you with an introduction to thinking about your values. Methods Fellow Workshop: Audible knowledge: soundscapes, podcasts and digital audio scholarship

With the rise of web-based scholarship and affordable digital audio equipment, artists and researchers are increasingly turning to audio formats as way to share their work with a larger audience and to cultivate new forms of knowledge rooted in listening. This workshop will offer an introduction to digital audio recording and editing (using Reaper, a digital audio workstation which can be downloaded/used for free on an extended trial basis). We will focus particularly on the editing choices for soundscape composition and podcasting, and participants will have the opportunity to produce a short audio piece over the course of the workshop.

At intermediate 2 level, the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme. While the grammar is analysed within a context, explicit grammar instruction becomes an integral part of the course.

CULP: German Basic 2 for Academic Purposes (LAP) - SCHOOLWIDE (7 of 7) Finished 11:30 - 13:00 Zoom Video Communication Software

This class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts:

The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc.

The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate.

JTC: Advanced German Conversation Hours charged (6 of 6) Finished 12:45 - 13:45 Zoom Video Communication Software

Please note that the Conversation Hours will be delivered online

This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2/C1 level upwards) a chance to practice speaking German with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web links, video etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for low-pressure, informal practice. This is also a great follow-up activity for CULP German learners and can be repeated year after year.

Participants from German Advanced CULP are warmly invited to attend the German Conversation Hour.

Hosted by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Institutional and International Relations, Professor Eilís Ferran, this session will provide an overview of the University's new Academic Career Pathways (ACP) scheme for research and teaching academics, which replaces the previous Senior Academic Promotions (SAP) scheme, ahead of the launch of the ACP 2022 exercise in September 2021.

Key aspects of this process will be highlighted, together with an overview of the ACP CV Scheme, and some common misconceptions addressed.
