Capturing your audience’s attention and keeping it is vital for any type of public engagement. Having a good story to tell and then telling it in a compelling way enables you to connect with a wide audience. This module takes you through the art and science of storytelling: exploring attention and motivation, dramatic structure, rhetorical devices, visual enhancements, and peripheral influences so that you can craft your own engaging story.

Why is YouTube popular? Because people love watching videos. A research video can be a great way to get your message across to your collaborators, your friends, and the wider world as well as being a condition of some funding bodies. But it isn't easy to do well - and this is where this course will make a difference. Come along and learn the skills needed to plan, shoot & edit high quality footage for research videos so that your video can stand out from the crowd. You just need yourself, a camera phone and your enthusiasm!

What is in Impact? This course is going to disentangle academic and non-academic impact. It will explore the current research environment and impact agenda and help you understand how research is funded. You will get to discuss your research in small groups, and think about the types of impact it could generate. You will also understand where Public Engagement sits in the wider Impact agenda. You will have the opportunity to analyse impact cases studies that featured Public Engagement as a pathway to Impact. (Lunch will be provided)

In this hands-on session, we will be working in teams to develop pitches and prototypes for interactive experiences based on our research. You will be guided through the process of ideas generation, modelling, and playtesting, and we will conclude by pitching our game designs to each other. These games can be analogue or digital, and no previous or coding experience is required. However, you must have attended the introduction session ‘Game Changers: Using Game Design to Promote Playful Engagement with Academic Research’.

Come to this Public Engagement Seminar to hear about an inspirational patient and public involvement (PPI) project from one of your colleagues in the University, Dr Anna Spathis. The PPI project won a prize at the 2018 Vice-Chancellor's public engagement with research awards.

This is also an opportunity to network with others interested in Public Engagement and to talk to a member of the Public Engagement Team.

This 2 hour workshop will discuss "why does research matter and how do we share it?"

This workshop provides top tips and guidance on developing an impact evaluation survey that is robust. This will include helping participants identify and avoid common pitfalls in impact evaluation questionnaire design, as well as accounting for key issues such as representative sampling. Participants will also have the opportunity to develop their own survey questions with feedback and support during the workshop.

Using Rhetoric to Improve the Impact of Communication new Tue 14 Apr 2015   09:30 Finished

Rhetoric is the language that we use to enhance the impact of what we say. It can be applied in all instances when we communicate, including scientific writing and oral presentations.

This one-day workshop will be looking at the theories and skills of rhetoric, with opportunities to analyse, experiment with and experience their impact on communication. Focussing on writing and oral presentations, this workshop will look at the broad application of rhetoric from the principles of Aristotle, through to their contemporary use by figures such as Barack Obama. After learning about some tools and techniques, participants will look at examples and case studies, and apply them to examples of their own writing and oral presentation with group peer review and feedback.

Details of Information covered:- • Aristotle and Rhetoric (Ethos, Logos, Pathos) • The Canons of Rhetoric (Invention, Arrangement, Style, Memory, Delivery) • Tricks and strategies (repetition, power of 3 etc) • Looking in detail at 4 different speeches and what makes them successful (Ken Robinson, Steve Jobs, Martin Luther King, and a TED talk of a Biochemist)

This evening seminar will focus on what it takes to be a good leader and team manager in a research group – from recruiting the right people, through communication skills, building professional relationships and motivating others, to problem and conflict resolution. Researchers at different stages of their career will share their own experiences and Sharon Saunders will describe training available for University members as well as sharing preliminary findings of what advice new group leaders give to postdocs. The questions and discussions will be followed by a drinks reception, providing the opportunity for ongoing discussion with the speakers and attendees.

Working Across Cultures: A Practical Introduction to Intercultural Communication

Have you considered how culture may be influencing your professional relationships and interactions? Do you know which factors to consider when dealing with other nationalities? Are you using to your advantage what you may have already noticed or experienced? The workplace today is truly international in composition and intercultural competency is an invaluable and positive addition to your skill set.

This half day session is an introduction to the field of intercultural communication with an emphasis on practical application and developing self-awareness. It is a fun, engaging, relevant topic that will enable you to work more confidently and effectively with any nationality. You will become familiar with key variations across national cultures, so that you can recognise if/when and why cross-cultural misunderstandings are occurring, as well how to be more flexible in your approach.

You can expect a mixture of trainer-led content, as well as interactive exercises in pairs and small groups

This day workshop will help you publish your research paper in the most effective way, so that many people will read, cite and build on it, thus progressing your career. The course is for PhD students and postdocs at any stage, whether or not you have already written or published a paper. It focuses on how to write your research paper, how to navigate the peer review process and how to choose a journal for it.

Trainer

Anna Sharman PhD is an experienced researcher trainer who has been an in-house biology journal editor and scientific publishing consultant. She can give insider insights into how to write and publish scientific journal papers most effectively.

Cancellation and Non-attendance Policy

Due to high demand the GSLS will not accept cancellations within 48 hours of the start of the course. Cancellations must be registered by 10am on Sunday 25th September. Any cancellations after this point will be treated as non-attendance.

Non-attendance on this course will result in you being invoiced for £50 to cover expenses.

The course will help you understand what scientific journals want, how to navigate the peer review process, how to choose the journal that will give you the best results as fast as possible, and how to structure and write your paper. You will get a chance to work on your own next paper, putting together key sentences into a structure and abstract.
