Web Authoring (Level 2): CSS - Cascading Style Sheets for Beginners

In this the second of three courses, this practical-based course follows on from Web Authoring (Level 1): HTML - For Beginners and is for anyone with a basic understanding of HTML. The course will introduce Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and show how they can (and should) be used effectively when creating web pages. The course teaches how to write CSS from scratch using a basic Text Editor. By the end of the course participants will have adapted the small website created in the 'HTML for Beginners' course consisting of four pages so that it is styled using a single Cascading Style Sheet. Course participants will have the opportunity to publish their web pages using DS-Web. For those wishing to extend their knowledge the third course in this series Web Authoring (Level 3): CSS - Cascading Style Sheets Responsive Web Design introduces Media Queries to make the web site responsive for use on both large screens and mobile phones.

• How HTML content and CSS style work together
• How CSS works (inline, internal and externally linked)
• The structure of CSS (selectors, properties and values)
• Annotating CSS
• Text (size and font)
• Colour (text and background color)
• Using Hexadecimal, RGB and RGBA Colours
• Implementing Class and ID Selectors
• Implementing and styling Fonts
• Using Google Fonts
• Introducing ems <em> and how to use them
• Background images and textures
• Borders, margins and padding (thinking about HTML as “boxes”)
• Positioning elements on the page
• Common Image Properties
• Resizing and optimising images using online Photo Editor
• Uploading your personal web pages to DS-Web

Presentation followed by practical work

Notepad ++ and Chrome on MCS Windows

• The practical work will be done on PCs unless otherwise specified, although the course is platform independent and therefore suitable also for Mac and Linux users.
• If you would like to take away a copy of the Web page you create, please bring a USB memory stick. If you can logon to your MCS account, you will have an opportunity to set up your Web pages using DS-Web on that account.
