University Information Services - Digital Literacy Skills course timetable

• This hands-on course is a follow up from the Excel: Introduction course.

The course is designed to take someone from having no knowledge of the Unix command line to being able to navigate around directories, and doing simple file manipulation. Then some of the more basic commands, will be introduced, including information on how to get more help from the system itself. Finally accessing remote computers by ssh and the most basic of shell scripts will be introduced.

This course is designed for the Training Manager(s) of a new provider on the University Training Booking System. (UTBS) and it will take them through theory and practicals on how to manage their training programme on the UTBS

This course will cover the use of Falcon Content Management Service by content and site managers.

Please note: Falcon on Plone will be migrating to Falcon-on-Drupal over the the 2019-2020 academic year. If you are new to Falcon on Plone and have a requirement to learn the Falcon system, this course is for you. If your department plans to migrate soon (please ask your departmental IT Officer) there is a Falcon on Drupal: Migration from Falcon On Plone - An Introduction course. An informative and social event to celebrate the launch of a new University Developer Hub.

University Information Services with support from developers across the University have been working on customising a University Developer Hub. The Hub is hosted using a GitLab application, with the aim to provide a useful collaboration resource for developers and code users.

There will be short presentations from the alpha testers who will share their experience and involvement in testing the hub. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions about the service and meet with like-minded professionals involved with developing and coding.

To celebrate the launch of the University Developer Hub, all attendees are welcome to stay for drinks and light refreshments served after the presentation.

This course will introduce ATLAS.ti a Computer Aided Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) which supports qualitative and mixed methods research. It provides a means to collect, organise and analyse content from interviews, focus group discussions, surveys and audio.

This course is designed for Training Administrators of a new provider on the University Training Booking System (UTBS) and it will take them through theory and practicals on how to administer their training programme on the UTBS.

Adobe InDesign CC is the industry leading page design and layout application. You will build up a publication from ready-prepared text, images and graphics in the same way as QuarkXpress and PageMaker.

The Business Information Team within Academic and Financial Planning and Analysis (AFPA) - formerly Planning Resource Allocation Office makes data for reporting and analysis for different parts of the University. They are currently using a Tableau Server for publishing and sharing their reports and data sources, to enable their data users to access the information, interact with the data, and create their own analysis in a safe environment.

In this presentation, the Business Information Team will show you how the Tableau Server operates and some of the work they are doing. They will present the structure of their Tableau site, the active directory groups, and the people and projects that are live and using Tableau across the University Administrative Services.

The Tableau Server core license is available to all members of the University. AFPA has implemented the administrative site, while UIS are developing a strategy to implement the Teaching and Research sites.

In this the first of three courses, this practical-based course is for people new to writing Web pages. Only the basics of HTML (hypertext mark-up language) will be covered. The course teaches how to write HTML from scratch using a basic Text Editor and focuses on content and structure as opposed to style. By the end of the course participants will have created four personal linked web pages. For those wishing to extend their knowledge the second course in this series Web Authoring (Level 2): CSS - Cascading Style Sheets for Beginners introduces CSS styling elements which will add colour and styling to the HTML web site created in this course. The third course in this series Web Authoring (Level 3): CSS - Cascading Style Sheets Responsive Web Design introduces Media Queries to make the web site responsive for use on both large screen and mobile phones.

It is particularly suited for the writing of theses, papers and technical documents.

It can be used for the presentation of plain text (including accented characters and letters outside the English alphabet), the typesetting of mathematics, the generation of tables, and producing simple diagrams. It is particularly suited for the writing of theses, papers and technical documents.

Following on from the Photoshop CC: Introduction (Level 1) course, this course covers some of the more advanced features of Adobe Photoshop CC, which is the latest version of the popular image manipulation and editing tool for graphics and design professionals and photographers. The course will explore some of the more advanced features of Photoshop. Techniques will be explained and demonstrated, and participants will then be given the opportunity to practice these for themselves.

The course aims to give an introductory overview of High Performance Computing (HPC) in general, and of the facilities of the High Performance Computing Service (HPCS) in particular.

Practical examples of using the HPCS clusters will be used throughout, although it is hoped that much of the content will have applicability to systems elsewhere.
