This training is intended for staff and post graduate students who regularly use DSE to help prevent or reduce the risk of possible health problems arising from computer use. The training is also aimed at those responsible within departments for assisting with the DSE risk assessment process. The course will provide an understanding of the DSE Regulations 1992 (as amended 2002) and discuss employer's and employee's duties regarding the assessment of DSE workstations. There will be theory and a practical demonstration. The training will allow time to discuss some of the common health problems and concerns that may be associated with poor workstation set-up with examples of possible solutions.

This training will provide delegates with a basic knowledge of asbestos awareness, the risks and the legal requirements under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

Asbestos awareness training is mandatory for all University personnel meeting the prerequisites of the Asbestos Regulations and ACoPs (Accepted Codes of Practice). Training is typically required for personnel who could inadvertently disturb asbestos during the course of their work/activities or instruct someone to do so, eg personnel who work on buildings.

An annual event for Biological Safety Officers (BSOs).

Dangerous Goods by Air (IATA) Course charged Mon 22 Apr 2024   09:30 Not bookable

This is a CAA approved 3-day training course and open book examination, covering the requirements of the IATA Dangerous Goods by Air Regulations. Someone possessing this qualification will be an asset to their department as carriers ask for more assurances about the packaging and labelling of cargoes.

  • Note 1: There is a charge for this training (see 'Charging' section below).
  • Note 2: Each participant will need to purchase and bring an up to date IATA manual (which is updated annually) for this Course. A few copies can be loaned if requested at least two weeks prior to the training but others will have to purchase or borrow one independently.

There will be a 0930 start on the first day but subsequent start, finish and break times will be a matter of negotiation with the trainer.

The next full IATA course is due to be organised centrally in 2025.

This course will provide a refresher of what is expected of Departmental fire safety managers to assist responsible persons to comply with current fire safety legislation.

If you are a newly appointed Departmental Safety Officer (DSO), this course will give you all the essential information you need to understand your new role - what the role involves and what is doesn’t. We will introduce the key topics of Health and Safety that you will be working with and have plenty of opportunity to discuss any queries that you have. The course should be completed within 3 months of being appointed as a DSO. Space permitting, we also welcome current DSOs and others with a health and safety role.

University staff working in embedded accommodation at Addenbrooke's Hospital should attend the NHS' fire training for its tenants. This will cover general fire safety awareness specific to the main hospital. (See related courses below for further details.)

Managing Safely is ideally suited to managers, research supervisors, administrators with safety responsibilities and Departmental Safety Officers across all sectors of the University. It leads to a nationally recognised and accredited qualification.

Please note to be successful in gaining the qualification delegates will need to pass an assessment on day 3 of the course and complete a risk assessment project to be handed in at a later date. (IOSH is the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health.)

This course is an essential component of training for new laser users, which should be backed up by practical training in departments.

The course may be suitable for users of other classes of lasers, depending on the risk, but please discuss this with your Laser Safety Officer first.

The Session covers detailed background and case studies of Legionella Bacteria and how it can colonise in domestic water systems. Overview of current legislation and guidance, monitoring and control measures, record keeping and escalation procedures.

Online: Fire Safety Training Self-taught Bookable

To raise fire safety awareness for all members of the University and assist fire safety managers to comply with current fire safety legislation.

Please note: You will have to register to access the new ClickHSE Portal for the first time. Access to a computer, tablet or mobile phone which has the ability to connect to the internet and open a webpage will be required.

If you have already completed and passed the online fire safety training this academic year the information will only be recorded once on the University Training Booking System (UTBS).

A very high proportion of accidents reported to the Safety Office from around the University involve sharps of one sort or another. In this module we will look at how you can reduce hazards when working with glass and sharps.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify potential sharp hazards in your environment
  • Describe appropriate control measures when working with blades
  • Describe appropriate control measures when working with glass
  • Describe appropriate control measures when working with needles and cannulas
  • Follow safe disposal practices
  • Follow the first aid procedures when dealing with a sharps injury

This module will take 30-40 minutes to complete. At the end of the module there is an activity to review what you have learnt.

Online: GM Risk Assessment (v2) Self-taught Bookable

An on-demand online training course that explains what to consider when assessing the risk of work with genetically modified organisms (GMOs), requirements for notification to the HSE and how to assign the appropriate activity class and containment level for your work.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Describe which regulations govern the University’s work on GMOs.
  • Follow the appropriate approval processes for proposed GM work.
  • Propose suitable steps to reduce or control the hazards of GM work.
  • Complete a GM risk assessment form using appropriate sources for information.

This module will take approximately 90 minutes to complete.

At the end you will be required to test your knowledge by completing the quiz (allow another 30 min for this).

This online course provides Heads of Departments with the appropriate health and safety knowledge to suitably manage their department.

This course is a basic introduction, providing an overview of laser safety. It is designed to complement practical instruction given on the use of specific equipment.

This module will take approximately 45 minutes to complete.

Note: This online training forms part one of the Laser safety for Class 3B and 4 laser users and research supervisors course. Part two of the course is a workshop session. Users of Class 3B and 4 lasers must attend both parts one and two unless informed otherwise by their departmental Laser Safety Officer.
