Retirement: Pre-retirement Course Prerequisites
The last two years before retirement are a good time to prepare for personal change in readiness for leaving employment. This programme will include detailed information on occupational and state pensions, financial advice and planning, tax, health and legal issues, as well as the emotional issues accompanying retirement. You will have the opportunity to share information and discuss any concerns about retirement in a relaxed setting. This programme involves attendance for one afternoon per week for four weeks.

- Representatives from University Pensions Administration will provide details of the occupational pension schemes relevant to those attending the course (CPS, USS and CFPS). Benefits statements will be prepared and they will also answer individual queries.
- Kate Merrington, Welfare Benefits Adviser will look at the state pension and how it is calculated, together with other benefits that can be claimed. It will cover the recent changes. This session is also helpful for those planning early retirement.
- Philip Bowden-Pickstock, Cambridge Branch Manager of the Money Wise IFA Group, will give a general overview of ways to increase retirement income. This information should help people decide whether detailed personal financial advice would be appropriate.
- Kate Merrington will give details of how tax is collected in retirement and answer questions.
- A Crime Reduction Officer from Parkside Police Station will outline ways to improve personal security in the home.
- Jenny Walker, Solicitor with Tee Lorimers Solicitors, outlines how to protect assets in the event of death or mental incapacity with particular reference to wills and Powers of Attorney.
- Jan Croft, Nurse at Red House Surgery, will talk about how to get and remain healthy in retirement.
