Description

This risk assessment briefing follows the basic departmental induction and is mandatory for all new staff, students or visitors who will be doing one or more of the following:

  • running experiments
  • providing technical support
  • carrying out workshop or maintenance work
  • managing other people's work
  • running events

You may only attend this session if you have done Part 1 (see "prerequisites" below).

Target audience
  • Staff, students and visitors working at Physics who will be doing practical work or managing events or other people
  • Further details regarding eligibility criteria are available
Prerequisites

You will also need to BOOK AND ATTEND the Physics Induction Part 1 - this will take place immediately before this session

Objectives

By the end of this session participants should be able to:

  • Identify significant hazards in a basic risk assessment
  • Evaluate risk levels
  • Choose suitable measures to control the significant risks
  • Find University guidance and forms for risk assessment
  • Explain significant findings of a risk assessment to others
Aims

To provide information on the elements of risk assessment and how to do a basic assessment for work, events or work areas.

Format

Presentation and short case studies

Assessment

There will be a short quiz at the end of the session (please bring a pen).

Notes

This session follows approximately 10 minutes after the Departmental Induction Part 1: HS & HR induction briefing.

Exemption from this session will be granted if participants can provide clear (written) evidence of having:

  • attended a similar session at the University of Cambridge or elsewhere,

OR

  • extensive experience of risk assessment in practice
