Physics Health & Safety: Induction for Graduate Students
BeginnersNew

Mon 8 Oct 2018

Description

Departmental health and safety induction for graduate students, undergraduate students (Part IB, II, or III) MASt students, and staff starting study or work at the Department of Physics.

Session 1 of this briefing is for everyone and covers what to do in the event of an emergency, and how to report problems.

There will be a short break before Session 2, which is for people carrying out practical experiments in a laboratory, doing other practical (e.g. maintenance) work, managing events or other people.

When there are new staff at an induction, this will be preceded by a short HR induction.

Anyone only working in an office is not required to attend Session 2, unless they manage people or events.

Target audience
  • MPhil and PhD students who will be working at the Department of Physics, University of Cambridge
  • Further details regarding eligibility criteria are available

  • Describe their own, their supervisor's and the department's responsibilities for health and safety
  • Explain the requirements for safe working out of normal 'OPEN' hours of the department
  • Find information on how to set up workstations so they avoid lost time due to musculoskeletal problems

By the end of Session 2, people doing practical experiments/work or managing events/others should also be able to:

  • Identify hazards and related risks
  • Consider how they can carry out their project/activity without undue risks to themselves and others
  • Draft a risk assessment for their proposed project/event
  • Justify their risk control measures to their supervisor and others
Aims

To enable students to work safely at the Department of Physics, and comply with legal and other requirements, regardless of what they are doing.

Format

Presentation, with short risk assessment exercise for Part 2

Assessment

There will be an online assessment after the event.

Notes

You must attend these sessions to be allowed to carry out any work at the Department. If you miss these for a legitimate reason, you may instead attend the regular twice-monthly departmental H&S induction (please notify the Graduate Office if this is likely to be the case).

If you were a summer student and attended an induction in the summer, please let the Graduate Office know.

Duration

Two sessions: Session 1 is approximately one hour, followed by Session 2 (risk assessment, also one hour) after a 15-minute break. Session 1 will be preceded by a 20 minute HR induction if there are new staff members present.

Frequency

October each year
