Topics covered
  • Hazards of laser radiation
  • Types and causes of injury
  • Laser classification
  • Requirements of laser standard (EN 60825) and University handbook "Safe Use of Lasers"
  • Safety Management & Departmental policy (local resources, responsibilities of PIs, users, LSO)
  • Consequences of failure in managing safety Risk Assessment and Local Rules
  • Maximum Permissible Exposure
  • Limiting Aperture
  • Selecting suitable control measures (beam enclosures, interlocks, safety eyewear, good practice)
Objectives

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the risks of laser use depending on laser type
  • Explain the control measures required to use lasers safely
  • Carry out a basic risk assessment for work with lasers
  • Explain the steps required to calculate Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE)
  • Develop a safe system of work taking into account other hazards in the lab
  • Find guidance and support on risk assessment
Aims

The purpose of this course is to make laser users and supervisors aware of potential biological effects of lasers, legal requirements and precautions required for working safely with Class 3B and Class 4 lasers. This is part of the Department of Physics procedure for management of laser safety.
