This is an introductory course which is required for users and supervisors of Class 3B and Class 4 lasers, before they receive hands-on training for use of specific lasers, and for registering as an "Authorized Laser User" in accordance with University of Cambridge and Department of Physics policy and procedure.
- Anyone using lasers or supervising laser users at the Department of Physics, University of Cambridge. If there are spaces available, the session may be opened to others at the University.

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:
- Describe the risks of laser use depending on laser type
- Explain the control measures required to use lasers safely
- Carry out a basic risk assessment for work with lasers
- Explain the steps required to calculate Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE)
- Develop a safe system of work taking into account other hazards in the lab
- Find guidance and support on risk assessment
The purpose of this course is to make laser users and supervisors aware of potential biological effects of lasers, legal requirements and precautions required for working safely with Class 3B and Class 4 lasers. This is part of the Department of Physics procedure for management of laser safety.
Presentation and exercise
This course is an alternative to the University of Cambridge Safety Office course on Class 3B and Class 4 lasers. Either course is suitable for registering as an Authorized Laser User at the Department of Physics.
