Physics Health & Safety: Ionising Radiation Briefing for Users of X-Ray Generators (in person)

Description

A short briefing for anyone who wishes to use X-ray generators at Department of Physics, University of Cambridge. Required before attending hands-on training on specific X-ray equipment and part of registrations as "Ionising Radiation User" (for details see this page).

Objectives

By the end of the session, X-ray users should be able to:

  • Describe the main risks of using X-ray generators
  • Explain why risks must be controlled
  • List the types of measures used to control risks
  • Describe duties for risk control
  • Explain what to do if there is a problem
Aims

To provide information on radiation risks and precautions and the requirements of University of Cambridge (which comply with IRR 2017), in preparation for the attendees receiving hands-on training on use of specific X-ray equipment at the Department of Physics.

To assist in compliance with Department of Physics procedure on managing risks from ionizing radiation.

Assessment

After the training session you will be enrolled onto the quiz and emailed a link. If necessary revise and complete the quiz. There are 10 questions of which you need to get 8 correct. If you fail the quiz you need to email hstraining@phy.cam.ac.uk. You will then be asked to revise and be given another attempt at completing the quiz.

Location

The briefing will be held in Rutherford HEP Library (Room 947), in the Rutherford Building, Department of Physics.

Notes

Participation at the University of Cambridge Safety Office X-Ray Generators and Other Equipment Generating Ionising Radiations is an alternative and will provide exemption from this session. Evidence of other similar trainings will also be considered - please contact Physics Health and Safety Office (hstraining@cam.ac.uk; 01223 337421).

One session of one hour approximately

Twice a term (more sessions will be set up if there is sufficient demand).
