This course provides a practical introduction to the writing of Python programs for the complete novice. Participants are lead through the core aspects of Python illustrated by a series of example programs. Upon completion of the course, attentive participants will be able to write simple Python programs and customize more complex code to fit their needs.

Please note that the content of this course has recently been updated. This course now mostly focuses on core concepts including Python syntax, data structures and reading/writing files. Concepts and strategies for working more effectively with Python are now the focus of a new 2-days course, Data Science in Python.

This event is open to you if you are at the mid-point of your postdoc contract at Cambridge. The aim is help you to position yourself for the next stage of your career (in academia or otherwise) at a key point in your postdoc journey by reflecting on your professional development activities so far and giving you some guidance and tools to support you in reaching your future career goals. The event will be facilitated by members of the Postdoc Academy, the Postdoc RD Team and Careers Service. You will also meet staff members from other University services who offer resources for postdocs. At the end of the session, you will have a set of actions to help guide you in your next steps.

Come along to this session if you’d like to develop some practical tools for becoming a white ally and build a strong antiracist identity. The training will be split into two 1h sessions. This will allow us to make space for discussion while not making the zoom meeting too long. Before undertaking any piece of primary research it’s important to be aware of as much of the existing literature as possible. A systematic literature review can also be a research end in itself. And it’s not something to be taken lightly. But how can you be sure you’re being as rigorous as necessary? How can you manage the references you find, document the process, and also know when to stop searching?

This session assumes attendees have already had prior introductory training in literature searching. It is a prerequisite that you have attended either Introduction to Literature Searching (if you are a University of Cambridge staff member or student) or Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching (if you are an NHS staff member). Exceptions will be made if you received similar training from another department or university - please contact us if you have any questions about prerequisites.

UPDATE: Please note that this session is taking place remotely, not in the Medical Library as previously advertised. Please do not go to the Medical Library training room. You will be contacted by the training team with information about how to join the session remotely.

The RD team are offering one-to-one meetings online over the coming weeks for all postdocs. These meetings will be tailored to your individual needs and provide an opportunity to consider and discuss topics relating to learning, skills and personal development. This is not an exhaustive list but topics may include a variety of issues including:

• Managing your time whilst working from home
  

• Collaborating effectively

• Maintaining resilience and coping strategies

• Reflecting on and identifying your key areas for development

Each meeting will last for up to 45 minutes and, given the present circumstances relating to Covid-19, will be conducted online using Teams or Zoom.

One-hour workshops focusing on Zoom essentials. Participants will learn how to:

• Book a series of sessions in advance.
• Use the interactive whiteboard and the chat facility.
• Share content (e.g. Power Point presentations).
• Share computer audio.
• Create breakout rooms.
• Integrate content from Moodle and / or Google Drive.

The workshops will be hands-on and participants (limited to 12 per session) will have the opportunity to practice all these features.
