This course will explain how communication can lead to impact – and how impacts should be communicated for the REF (or similar). You will learn how to simplify your language so it is economical, easy to read and spells out a clear, compelling narrative. It will also explain how you can apply journalistic techniques to ensure supporting testimonials are both relevant to and a truthful reflection of your work's real world impacts.

Part of the Writing to Engage Series with Matt Warren, Deputy Editor of The Conversation (UK) https://theconversation.com/uk

This workshop is part of the Bridging the Gap from Research to Practice SHSS Online Programme http://ppd4phd.com/

Fri 25

Time is tight and people are busy, so how do you get an audience for YOUR research? This course will help you sum up your research in a two-minute - or 250-word - "elevator pitch" profile, which you can go on to use as a blueprint for all other communication, whether it's a biography on the university homepage, a media pitch or a letter to a policymaker or collaborator. You will learn how to engage audiences from the opening sentence, what to include (and avoid), and how to think about your research goals in a clearer, simpler way.

    • Following this session, you will be offered the chance to share your pitch with Matt and receive feedback on a one to one basis. **
