This course seeks to provide you with an overview of the principles, responsibilities and importance of research integrity. We will cover what research misconduct looks like, how it can be avoided and reported, and where you can find help for maintaining and promoting integrity in your research work.

The course consists of two parts. The first part is the learning section, and will take approximately 30-40 minutes to complete. The second part is a 10 minute quiz to test your knowledge. Please ensure you complete both parts in order to complete the course.

There are three versions to account for disciplinary variation:

  • Biological Sciences and Clinical Medicine
  • Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Technology and Physical Sciences

Research integrity is core to the requirements of being a research leader, producing excellent research and helping others do the same. This session will, through a mixture of presentation, discussion and case studies, explore the:

  1. University's expectations as regards integrity & how research leaders can apply this in their own work
  2. approaches that research leaders can use to support their teams and colleagues to meet the highest standards
  3. the issues of research integrity and misconduct, including the challenges posed by authorship.

The course will be delivered by the Research Governance and Integrity Team in the Research Strategy Office.

Research integrity is core to the requirements of being a researcher, producing excellent research and helping others do the same. Researchers are often faced with dilemmas and questions which put their integrity at risk. In these situations, how do you decide what is important for you and how to apply your awareness of good research principles into responsible conduct?

This session will, through a mixture of presentation, discussion and case studies, explore the the questions and challenges postdoctoral researchers face in their research practice. We will share hints, tips, and resources and encourage participants to reflect on and share best practice and their experiences. Through small group discussion, you will have the chance to reflect on your experience and share best practice with fellow participants.

Researchers are often faced with dilemmas and questions which put their integrity at risk. In these situations, how do you decide what is important for you and how to stay close to your values while protecting your integrity and respecting the relevant professional codes of conduct? Our self-taught online research integrity module introduces the basic research integrity concepts.

This workshop facilitates further discussion of the case studies introduced in the moodle course and explores the questions and challenges researchers face in their research practice. We will share hints, tips, and resources and encourage participants to reflect on and share best practice and their experiences.

This e-learning module is available via the MRC Regulatory Support Centre’s e-learning platform. It will introduce the principles and guidelines laid out in the MRC ethics series document Good research practice: Principles and guidelines.

This course is intended to support local induction material for new starters, and act as a reminder and entry point into the GRP document for more established staff, and will take about an hour to complete. You can visit the module as many times as you wish and complete it over several sessions. Your progress through the course will be tracked so you can pick up where you left off.

Research Metrics (online course) Self-taught Bookable

Data, Metrics, Key Performance Indicators... these terms are everywhere these days, as we increasingly seek hard data to monitor and improve the quality of many of the things we do. Research metrics can be very useful, but they also come with important caveats, so we need to be responsible in how we use these tools.

In this module, you will learn:

  • the meaning of common metrics such as Journal Impact Factor and H-index
  • what are the main limitations of metrics
  • a better, responsible approach to using metrics

You will receive the URL for the course in the confirmation email after booking.

Research Office - WDYDTL ? new Tue 12 Feb 2019   00:00 Finished

UTBS created 30 October 2019 - from paper records kept

This new half-day workshop has been designed to explore the ideas and techniques of the new discipline of Design Thinking as applied by companies such as IDEO www.ideo.com and the D-School at Stanford University in California www.dschool.stanford.edu

In this half-day course we will explore new ways to project manage that are personally authentic, quick and motivational. We won’t do GANTT charts (they have their place!) but we will look at daily habits such as setting iterative goals and having purpose and vision. We’ll also explore individual and collaborative 'modeling' techniques that allow a more creative and responsive approach to the complexities of our research projects (and their communication). Finally we will look at how creative companies use techniques such as 'prototyping' to test through activity rather than just thinking.

This course is for you if you want to understand how to design your projects to reflect your personality and the complexity and creativity involved in their design, implementation and outcomes.

You are encouraged to attend with an open mind 'beginners mind' and a willingness to discuss real issues and problems that would benefit from a creative solution. You will be encouraged to compete a short action plan to focus on next steps in the design, prototype and feedback process.

Being a researcher can mean juggling lots of different things. You might be wrestling with funding, or promoting your work, or finding the most up-to-date research, or even where to begin with writing up that data management plan you probably should have done a few weeks ago!

This course will introduce you to each of these concepts through a short video, a bit of reading, and a quick exercise to give you some time to explore and reflect on your own research needs. By the end of the course you will hopefully have a better idea of what your funder wants from you, how you can begin promoting your work, what techniques you can use to get that really useful research, as well as having already started writing up your data management plan.

All of our content will be self-guided but the Biological Sciences Libraries Team (email: sbslibraries@lib.cam.ac.uk) will be on hand throughout to have an online chat with you if you have any further questions or want to explore something further. If you have any technical issues or need any course content in a different format, you can contact George Cronin (Library Manager for Biological Sciences) at gmp36@cam.ac.uk who will be able to help.

  • Do you manage and share software for research?
  • Are you encountering problems when managing research code?
  • Is current best practice working for you and your group - or not?
  • Would you like to discuss solutions for these problems with other researchers and research software experts?

Jisc, in collaboration with SSI, University of Cambridge, University of Sheffield, University of Bath, University of Leicester, University of Birmingham, the British Library and STFC are inviting all researchers interested and passionate about developing or using research software to join a workshop on this subject.
