Managing Staff Performance: Disciplinary & Capability Procedures

As a manager, it is your responsibility to motivate staff and enable them to achieve the best possible results. Most of this is achieved in your informal day to day management and support of employees. However, problems sometimes arise and tools such as the University’s Capability, Disciplinary and Grievance procedures are there to support you and your staff in resolving a particular situation – they all include guidance about both informal and, where necessary, formal actions. This session is aimed at managers who wish to know more or refresh their knowledge about how and when these procedures can be used.

Number of sessions: 1

• to understand how the procedures fit in to the broader framework of managing others’ performance, behaviour and development
• to identify good practice that can help to prevent problems of underperformance or misconduct arising
• to have an overview of the formal elements of the Capability and Disciplinary procedures, including the key similarities and differences between them
• to have an overview of procedures in place to support employees with concerns in the work place, including the Grievance and Dignity and Work procedures

• Presentation, case studies and group discussion will be used to highlight key points
• Activities will give you an opportunity to discuss in a safe and supportive environment
