Description

This compulsory online course will equip you with the skills required to manage the research information you will need to gather throughout your graduate course, as well as the publications you will produce yourself. It will also help you enhance your online research profile and measure the impact of research.

The course is self-taught through Moodle.

Target audience

First year chemistry postgraduates. Further details regarding eligibility criteria are available here.

Objectives

After attending this session participants will be able to:

  • Use apps, social media, publisher websites, and citation databases, and subscribe to journal contents alert services, in order to keep up to date with the latest research published in your field
  • Log on to your Symplectic Elements account
  • Evaluate reference managers available and find the best one for your research topic

Understand what an ORCID is and how to obtain one

  • Interpret bibliometrics and altmetrics and understand their role in monitoring the impact of your and others’ research
  • Understand what open access publishing and open data are and know where to go for support in compliance with mandates
  • Begin to develop your online research profile
Aims

This session introduces tools for discovery and management of research information, with reference to:

  • Tools available for keeping up-to-date with the latest research in your field
  • Symplectic Elements, a tool for managing your publications list (and more)
  • Reference management software
  • ORCID, a unique author identifier
  • Open access publishing and open data in Cambridge
  • Bibliometrics, including altmetrics
  • Tips on developing your online research profile
