Description

This is a short session designed to give basic information on the operation and hazards of the Semi-Conductor Physics Clean Room (Mott Building) to Department of Physics designated first aiders.

Department of Physics designated first aiders only

Prerequisites

Attendees must have completed the 3-day first aid training organised by the University, and be designated as Department of Physics First Aiders by the Health and Safety Manager.

Objectives

By the end of this short briefing, first aiders should be able to:

1. Give a general description of what the Clean Room is for and what takes place in it

2. Identify where a casualty is by looking at the CCTV and the room map

3. Gain access to the Clean Room

4. Describe the main risks to look out for and how they will avoid these

5. Explain how work with hydrofluoric acid (HF) is organised, what treatement local colleagues will give to anyone exposed before the first aider arrives. Describe when to use Calcium gluconate and Hexafluorine.

6. Describe how much HF the casualty will need to be exposed to for major treatment to be needed, how to transfer the casualty to hospital (when to call an ambulance and when take by taxi) and what information to take to give to hospital staff (SP hospital info sheet).

Aims

To provide sufficient information to designated first aiders to enable them to assess risks and remain safe when delivering first aid to people at the SP Clean Room.
