Participants may find it helpful to undertake an online implicit association assessment before the session which will provide insight into Unconscious Bias. This is not a prerequisite for attending.

Project Implicit – Project Implicit was founded in the United States as a multi-university research collaboration in 1998. It continues to conduct applied research concerning thoughts and feelings that occur outside of conscious awareness or control.

Individuals are able to undertake short assessments on the demonstration website in about ten minutes at no cost.

This is an interactive workshop designed to help PhD students to enhance their scientific communication skills. Whether preparing for a conference, publishing a paper, or building an online research presence, this workshop equips students with tools to communicate their work with clarity, creativity, and confidence.

Workshop speakers:

Tintu Kuriakose, PhD - Postdoctoral research associate at the department of engineering. She is experienced researcher with peer reviewed publications in the field of Quantum optics, plasmonics and semiconductor physics.

Mashael Kamran, PhD - Postdoctoral research associate at the department of engineering. She is experienced researcher with peer reviewed publications in the field of Environmental Sustainability for mobility and energy transition.

This training course is an introduction to the principles and practices of environmental sustainability, with a focus on integrating these concepts into academic research. During this training, you will explore the environmental impacts of research activities and learn practical strategies to reduce their ecological footprint. Through group discussions and interactive exercises, you will gain insights into sustainable resource use, responsible data management, and low-impact research design.

The training aims to empower researchers to become agents of change within their disciplines, fostering a culture of sustainability in academia. By understanding the broader implications of their work, you will be better equipped to contribute to global environmental goals and societal well-being. This course not only enhances individual research practices but also promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and long-term thinking, helping shape a more sustainable future.

Research in the 21st century is a global endeavour, with research teams often being made up of individuals from different cultures. At our university we have students from 140 different countries, with around 25% of undergraduate students and over 50% of postgraduate students coming from outside the UK.

This diversity is one of our greatest strengths, however, intercultural communication can sometimes lead to misunderstandings. It's important to be aware of our own cultural assumptions and to try to understand those of others.

The session's content is based on research from intercultural studies and views culture as a framework of shared values, attitudes, and behaviours. It explores the nature of generalisations and the connection between national culture, other forms of diversity (such as gender, professional background, and generational differences), and, most importantly, personal preferences.

This workshop will introduce the technique of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to Physical Sciences researchers who are keen to evaluate the use of this technique for their work. With the increasing emphasis on sustainability from all fronts, researchers are now expected to reflect on the sustainability impact of their work, and understand the choices that might be available to them. This half day workshop will introduce the use of EcoInvent software for conducting LCA analyses. The workshop will be held in hybrid format - the in person attendees will have a room reserved in the Maxwell Centre, with refreshments available during the break. Online attendees will attend via zoom. When making your booking please make sure you are booking for the correct format i.e. in person or online.

The workshop will be led by NanoDTC alumnus Dr Taylor Uekert, who is currently at the Circular Economy for Energy Materials Team at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado.

Please Note: It is important that when you book on this course, on your booking confirmation page, click on Add to Calendar to start the process to import the course appointment into your calendar. Unconscious Bias new Tue 4 Nov 2025   13:00 CANCELLED

Diversity, in its various dimensions, has been firmly established as a key driver of innovation. However, creating inclusive environments to harness the power of diversity requires preparation. Whether we are aware of it or not, bias towards individuals who are different from us is inherent. Understanding the origins of bias and how to outsmart them is the crucial first step toward fostering a more inclusive space at Cambridge.
