The UL is unique: a national, legal deposit library with an amazing collection of around 8 million items - over two million of which you can browse on our open shelves. If that sounds a bit daunting, why not come on a brief orientation tour to help you find your way around? We’ll even tell you what we keep in the famous Library tower ... Please note this tour does not cover the University's vast electronic and digital collections: to find out more about using these, please see check for courses on our timetable or ask a member of Library staff for help. |

Do you have what it takes to beat the UL? Assemble a team to take on the challenge! A self-led Library induction with a difference! Solve a series of puzzles which will lead you all over the UL, while teaching yourself to navigate the building and our physical collections. Have fun, learn how to use the UL and you will receive a small prize on completion! Teams of up to 6 players can participate - if you want to play with your friends you'll need to make sure you all sign up to the same session. All players must be registered users of the University Library. Please note this is a self-led, treasure hunt style induction. We recommend signing up in a group of at least 3 people. Traditional orientation tours are also available here: traditional orientation tour |
The course consists of three components:

Find out how the Digital Presence Programme's work around metadata and related concepts to improve the University's websites and digital content. This work includes the 'Intranet in a Box' project, which aims to provision University institutions or departments with SharePoint sites that will provide common tooling and templating to improve defragmentation across the University. Data, including managing common data and improving our approach to information architecture, is crucial for this project and other University systems. This event is hosted by a panel of experts on the Intranet in a Box project. We aim to provide a forum for technical staff to learn about the project's framework for managing domain-level and institution-level data, and how it relates to the greater information architecture of University systems. Katya Samoylova from the Academic and Financial Planning and Analysis team (AFPA, Finance Division) will also provide an overview of their work around data governance. Topics
This event is aimed at IT and technical staff who are already familiar with metadata, taxonomies and related concepts. If you are not already aware of these concepts and what they are used for, you may find the related event useful: Content Community event - Metadata for content editors. A recording of this event will be available on the Content Community SharePoint site for anyone who cannot attend. |

There is an increasing emphasis in research on the management and sharing of data. Many funding bodies that support research undertaken at Cambridge require not only open access to any publications based on that research, but also to the data underlying it. This course will help you understand funders’ requirements for management and sharing of research data, and will provide opportunities to create your own data management plan and test out resources that will make the data management process easier. UPDATE: Please note that this session is taking place remotely, not in the Medical Library as previously advertised. Please do not go to the Medical Library training room. You will be contacted by the training team with information about how to join the session remotely. Please note: this session may be recorded. By signing up for the session, you register your consent for recording to take place. Please email librarytraining@medschl.cam.ac.uk if you have any questions about this. |
