If so join us in this friendly, introductory session to learn how to get up and running with Outlook 365 Email and Calendar. This course does not cover the Hermes migration tool or in-depth technical questions regarding Outlook and Exchange. For this information please see the Further Information for IT staff webpages. Second Year Recharge: Reconnect with Your PhD This four-day programme is designed to help you take a fresh and positive look at your work during the second year – a notoriously tricky stage to feel you have the clarity and motivation to keep going. This is true at the best of times, let alone during a global pandemic! We recommend that you attend all four sessions of the programme, but you are very welcome to book for single sessions, i.e. there is no requirement to sign up for the whole programme or to have completed the preceding sessions in order to book for a later one. For those who attend the morning session, there will also be an opportunity to attend an optional afternoon session, where we delve deeper into the content in a small group. The afternoon sessions will be limited to 30 people and will be available on a first come, first served basis. (Booking links for the afternoon session will be under 'joining instructions' in your booking confirmation email).
Although we want to work as hard as possible, we know that sacrificing play doesn’t work in the long run. We will do a self-care health check and then choose some simple steps to bring balance back into our lives. Discover how to prepare for times when you need to be resilient. We will learn how emotional strength is built from curiosity rather than building barriers and some practical ways to build proven resilience strategies into our everyday lives.

We aim to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout. This course provides an introduction to the basic theory and concepts of network analysis. Attendees will learn how to construct protein-protein interaction networks and explore them in full detail. We will subsequently use these networks to overlay large-scale data such as that obtained through RNA-Seq or mass-spec proteomics. The course will focus on giving attendees hands-on experience in the use of Cytoscape, an open source software platform for complex network analysis and visualization. We aim to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout. R is one of the leading programming languages in Data Science. It is widely used to perform statistics, machine learning, visualisations and data analyses. It is an open source programming language so all the software we will use in the course is free. This course is an introduction to R designed for participants with no programming experience. We will start from scratch by introducing how to start programming in R and progress our way and learn how to read and write to files, manipulate data and visualise it by creating different plots - all the fundamental tasks you need to get you started analysing your data. During the course we will be working with one of the most popular packages in R; tidyverse that will allow you to manipulate your data effectively and visualise it to a publication level standard. Methods Workshop: TEI workshop

The TEI (Text Encoding Initiative https://tei-c.org/) is a standard for the transcription and description of text bearing objects, and is very widely used in the digital humanities – from digital editions and manuscript catalogues to text mining and linguistic analysis. This course will take you through the basics of the TEI – what it is and what it can be used for – with a particular focus on uses in research, paths to publication (both web and print) and the use of TEI documents as a dataset for analysis. There will be a chance to create some TEI yourself as well as looking at existing projects and examples. The course will take place over two sessions a week apart – with an introductory taught session, then a chance to work on TEI records yourself, followed by a review and discussion session. |

They are entirely optional and you can attend as many or as few as you would like. Ethics is becoming an increasingly important issue for all researchers, particularly in the covid-19 era. The aim of this session is twofold: (I) to demonstrate the practical value of thinking seriously and systematically about what constitutes ethical conduct in social science research; (II) to discuss the new valences of research in the pandemic era and develop new practices to tackle the insecurity it has created. This intensive Persian course is designed particularly for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Persian language, culture and heritage. However the course can be equally useful for those who are interested in learning Persian for more general purposes. We offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce spoken and written language on variety of topics. The classes are going to be conducted more or less in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for speaking and listening practice in Persian. And the medium of class will swiftly change to Persian by the end of the term. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Persian and/or communicate in Persian with native speakers.
