A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Simplifying our Processes team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

Retirement: Pre-retirement - Pensions and Managing your Time in Retirement Finished 09:15 - 11:00 N/A - PPD Zoom (Internal Ref:ATL)


The last two years before retirement are a good time to prepare for personal change in readiness for leaving employment. We offer two different pre-retirement courses and recommend that you book on to both.

This course includes detailed information on occupational pensions and managing your time in retirement. You will have the opportunity to share information and discuss any concerns about retirement in a relaxed setting.

Representatives from University Pensions Administration will provide details of the occupational pension schemes relevant to those attending the course (CPS and USS). They will also answer individual queries. Benefit statements for participants who are members of the CPS scheme will be provided in advance of the session.

Our Learning and Development Consultant will lead an informal discussion on how to approach managing your time in retirement.

If you are also interested in Retirement: Pre-retirement - Legal and Finance please book that related course which will cover the following:

  • Legal Advisors from Barr Ellison, Cambridge will explore some of the key legal issues that you may wish to consider when approaching retirement i.e. Wills, Trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney.
  • Philip Bowden-Pickstock of Dartington Wealth will give a detailed overview of the different ways in which you may wish to consider managing your retirement income. He will give details of how tax is collected in retirement and answer questions.
  • HR colleagues will outline the possible options for retirement for Established staff and the processes involved with each option, as well as the actions that need to be taken.

Variant Discovery with GATK4 (IN PERSON) (4 of 4) Finished 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Room, Craik-Marshall Building

This workshop will focus on the core steps involved in calling variants from Illumina next generation sequencing data using the Genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK). You will learn about best practices in calling somatic variants: single nucleotide variants (SNVs), short insertion/deletions (indels) and copy number variants (CNVs). We will also cover considerations to take when calling variants on the mitochondrial genome, as well as variant calling from bulk and single-cell RNA-seq data. We will also cover how the data structures provided by GATK can help you process large datasets in parallel and at scale. Although this workshop focuses on human data, the majority of the concepts and approaches apply to non-human data, and we will cover some adaptations needed in those situations.

The training room is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access available to this level.

The Cambridge Teaching Forum is coordinated by the Cambridge Centre for Teaching and Learning and is open to everyone who teaches or supports students' learning across the collegiate university. It provides a stimulating environment to learn about innovative approaches to education at Cambridge, to meet colleagues, share ideas and reflect on some of the key developments in higher education.

The full day, in-person event consists of plenary sessions on selected themes, followed by parallel sessions of individual presentations or workshops, covering a range of topics.


The theme for the Cambridge Teaching Forum this year is:

Engaging with Development, Challenge and Change in Learning, Teaching, and Assessment

The event will be opened by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, Professor Bhaskar Vira, and will include an array of parallel sessions and plenary sessions with keynote speakers. A full programme for the event is now available on the CCTL website.

The Programme offers general language tuition with a focus on communicative competence.

At intermediate 2 level, the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme. While the grammar is analysed within a context, explicit grammar instruction becomes an integral part of the course.

Medicine: Systematic Literature Reviews - A 'How To' Guide (for University and NHS) Finished 10:00 - 12:00 Cambridge University Libraries Online

Before undertaking any piece of primary research it’s important to be aware of as much of the existing literature as possible. A systematic literature review can also be a research end in itself. And it’s not something to be taken lightly. But how can you be sure you’re being as rigorous as necessary? How can you manage the references you find, document the process, and also know when to stop searching?

This session assumes attendees have already had prior introductory training in literature searching. It is a prerequisite that you have attended either Introduction to Literature Searching (if you are a University of Cambridge staff member or student) or Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching (if you are an NHS staff member). Exceptions will be made if you received similar training from another department or university - please contact us if you have any questions about prerequisites.

UPDATE: Please note that this session is taking place remotely, not in the Medical Library as previously advertised. Please do not go to the Medical Library training room. You will be contacted by the training team with information about how to join the session remotely.

CDH Methods | Machine Learning Systems: a critical introduction new Finished 13:00 - 17:00 Cambridge University Library, IT Training Room

This in-person workshop will provide an accessible, non-technical introduction to Machine Learning systems, aimed primarily at graduate students and researchers in the humanities, arts and social sciences.

Key topics covered in the sessions will include:

  • Situating Machine Learning in the longer history of Artificial Intelligence
  • Machine Learning system architectures
  • The challenges of dimension reduction, classification and generalisation
  • Sources of bias and problems of interpretation
  • Machine Learning applications and their societal consequences

During the session participants will be encouraged to work through practical exercises in image classification. No prior knowledge of programming is required. Participants wishing to run the experiments for themselves will need access to a laptop, but no special software is required, just an up-to-date web browser and an internet connection. We will be using Google Colab for the text generation experiments which you have access to via your Raven log-in. The image classification experiments will require a GitHub account ([sign up here https://github.com/])

Funding Management Portal (FMP) Roadshows 2023 new Finished 14:00 - 14:45 Online Live Training

The Postgraduate Funding Project is working towards a big release in the Funding Management Portal in June 2023 and this roadshow will give colleagues an overview of the changes and benefits they can expect following the release. The roadshow will include contributions by the project’s sponsors, Prof Bhaskar Vira, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education, and Mike Nicholson, Deputy Head of Education Services, situating the project’s work in the context of the University’s wider strategic aims and highlighting the positive impact it will have for both applicants and staff who engage with the system.

The June release will allow colleagues to use the Funding Management Portal to:

  • Configure and collect funding applications through the Applicant Portal (GAP)
  • Find eligible applicants for their funds
  • Shortlist and share applications
  • Assess applications for funding
  • Update other funders in real time

The Funding Management Portal will also bring together all the information required for making informed decisions, such as real-time information about admissions statuses, other funders’ activities and applicants’ TOAST scores.

  • The Introduction to Languages and Cultures courses feature some less taught languages and are designed to offer a sneak preview into the world of these important civilisations. While learning the basics of the language, you will be able to view and appreciate the ancient as well as modern character of the lands and peoples.

These courses will not be formally assessed and students who attend regularly (12/15 sessions) will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

CULP’s Introduction to Language and Culture Hebrew course, designed for absolute beginners, promises to offer a welcoming and exciting start to your Hebrew studies. Both spoken and written Modern Hebrew will be taught two hours per week during Michaelmas and Lent terms. You will be given the opportunity to express yourself, read and write in the target language, and develop your ability to understand native speakers. Realistic amounts of homework will be given and students will be encouraged to avail themselves of Hebrew media within the Language Centre.
