These sessions will equip you with the skills and attitudes you need to guide, support and motivate your team through the process of change. More than ever, becoming a professional researcher – whether, for you, that means staying on in academia or bringing your research skills to another job sector – requires attributes like self-direction, persistence, and pro-activity; the willingness to think creatively and the capability to think ethically; an understanding of your own needs and wants, and empathy towards others. In other words, becoming a professional researcher requires you to demonstrate self-leadership. This bite-sized workshop will introduce you to the concept of self-leadership and how it can be applied to PhD research. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) might shed some light on these questions. Why this course might make a difference The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator presents a framework to help you understand yourself and others, by exploring differences and preferences in four areas of your personality. As a result of this exploration you may work more effectively and be more understanding in your relationships with others. Led by a qualified MBTI practitioner, the workshop comprises working through the MBTI questionnaire and self-assessment exercises, so that participants can:

Departmental Safety Officer Essentials

If you are a newly appointed Departmental Safety Officer, you should attend this course within three months of appointment where possible. Space permitting, we also welcome current DSOs and others with a health and safety role. The topics are also covered in other courses that are open to all comers. |

A microbiological safety cabinet (MSC) is a vital piece of equipment that helps to prevent exposure to biological hazards. All containment laboratory users and their supervisors should know how to use MSCs effectively, what the standards are for the different levels of containment, and how the facilities are managed. This course will help both users and managers understand their responsibilities in creating a safe working area and provide both theory and practical knowledge on the safe and effective use of tissue culture (Class II) cabinets. This session is primarily for those based on the Addenbrooke's Site, although others working at CL2/3 are encouraged to attend. |

A course to take you through conference poster design, with tips and resources to help with the content and presentation in order to ensure you communicate your research effectively. The course will cover where to source good quality, free graphics, how to include references in your poster, and advice about how best to present it at a conference. The session will NOT involve hands-on creation of a poster. UPDATE: Please note that this session is taking place remotely, not in the Medical Library as previously advertised. A webinar providing information on the following apprenticeship: Senior Leader Degree Level 7 (24months) The webinar will be presented by Marc Rothera of Anglia Ruskin University. During this lockdown period, PPD is keen to continue to promote development opportunities for University staff. This information webinar will help you to identify if you wish to progress your development by way of an Apprenticeship. We are looking to explore what interest there is at this current time in this Senior Leader Degree Level 7 apprenticeship to start September 2020. Please note: This apprenticeship standard is expected to change with the removal of the degree qualification in January 2021, moving towards a PostGrad diploma. Entry to these cohorts will be by application and is open to all University employees who meet the eligibility criteria. The webinar will be repeated and to assist with accessibility the webinars are being held on two video conferencing platforms, Zoom and MS Teams. This course will introduce graduate students, early-career researchers, and professionals in the humanities to the technologies of image recognition and machine vision, including recent developments in machine vision research in the past half-decade. The course will seek to combine a technical understanding of how machine vision systems work, with a detailed understanding of the possibilities they open to research and study in the humanities, and with a critical exploration of the social, political and ideological dimensions of machine vision. Have you ever struggled with styles of communication of others (peers, lecturers, supervisors, staff), wondered why some people seem to use more formal language, or be more direct than others? Culture plays a big part in how we communicate, and adjusting to the cultural communication norms means more than learning a foreign language. In Cambridge's diverse and multicultural environment, we constantly communicate with people whose cultural communication norms differ from ours, whether you are a native English speaker from the United Kingdom, a native English speaker from elsewhere in the world, or have learnt English as a foreign language. In order to avoid misunderstanding, or worse still, conflict, brought on by variations in communication styles we need to learn to make allowances for the cultural differences in how people communicate. To better understand cross-cultural complexity and increase your awareness of cultural identities, come to a session on intercultural communication to increase your cultural awareness and give you a better understanding of how culture may affect your everyday communication.
