In this module students will be introduced to meta-analysis, a powerful statistical technique allowing researchers to synthesize the available evidence for a given research question using standardized (comparable) effect sizes across studies. The sessions teach students how to compute treatment effects, how to compute effect sizes based on correlational studies, how to address questions such as what is the association of bullying victimization with depression? The module will be useful for students who seek to draw statistical conclusions in a standardized manner from literature reviews they are conducting.

This development programme for generalist and specialist administrators draws on the expertise of senior figures in the University and provides up to date information on the various strands and issues of University strategy and governance. It includes development of some key skills and a project activity, and offers a valuable opportunity to network with administrators from the UAS and other departments and institutions.

Selection for this programme is via nomination by School Secretaries, Heads of Division or Heads of Non-School Institutions during the summer. Nominees will need to demonstrate the benefit of participating, both for themselves and their institution. CULP: French Basic for Academic Purposes (LAP) (15 of 15) Finished 09:30 - 11:00 Zoom Video Communication Software

Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading French documents that they have come across or may meet in their research.

The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion.

Classes will be conducted in English, but there will be many opportunities to use French and practise reading aloud.

Machine learning gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. It encompasses a broad range of approaches to data analysis with applicability across the biological sciences. Lectures will introduce commonly used algorithms and provide insight into their theoretical underpinnings. In the practicals students will apply these algorithms to real biological data-sets using the R language and environment.

This course will start at Basic level and move quickly through the basics of Italian grammar. Students with some background in the Italian language (Intermediate level) are most welcome to join the group in January (Lent term) when we start reading more complex, original texts.

This workshop explores the principles of good postgraduate supervision, different approaches to supervising, how to deliver feedback for best results, and the teacher/learner roles of the supervisor-supervisee relationship. It is aimed at new or experienced postgraduate supervisors looking to develop their skills in effective and inspired pedagogy.

We are offering this ‘taster’ session to provide you with an introduction to thinking about your values. Following the introduction of the Professional Services Values of trust, respect, integrity and collaboration, we are offering this opportunity for you to consider how you can align these with your own personal values, and what this might mean in terms of how you live your life and go about your work.

Take your research stories to the next level with focused support to apply the knowledge, skills and techniques from our Introductory course, on your own research.

This module brings a small group together to focus on their own narratives, testing out ideas and refining their creations. Expect group sharing, peer review, co-working and creative testing. Optional individual coaching is also available for those that would want more targeted personal support.

Sarah is passionate about the art and science of communication and eloquential is her rattle bag of knowledge, skills and experience which she uses to train, coach and facilitate. Sarah collects research from areas such as psychology and neuroscience, along with practitioners’ experience from the performing arts to fill her bag of tricks, tips and advice. Sarah has been involved in public engagement since 2006, working closely with the Cambridge University. She is also a peripatetic teacher of communication and performance skills in schools, and a co-host of a podcast called Gin and Topic.

Psychological Safety – we have heard the term, but what does it mean on a practical level?

In this focused workshop we will bring the term to life – exploring what it means, and most importantly, sharing practical ideas of how we can each promote a culture where we each feel safe to be ourselves, safe to fully contribute and feel valued. We will focus on two key areas – Psychological Safety (feeling safe to put oneself at risk) and Psychological Standing (feeling entitled to speak up and to act).

Pearn Kandola has worked with organisations for nearly 40 years to promote inclusive and high performance cultures. In addition to working with Higher Education, they draw on their experience of working across a range of sectors in the UK and internationally.

Cambridge is one of the world’s leading universities, yet Black British students are statistically less likely to be awarded a First or Good Honours degree at Cambridge compared to their white peers. This disparity is known as the awarding gap. Institutional statistical analysis of admission data has shown that this disparity cannot be explained by factors such as previous education, socio-economic background or other intersecting variables including gender. The University has made a commitment to eliminate these inequitable degree outcomes and the last four years has seen considerable investment in research into the reasons for these troubling statistics.

This one-day forum is open to all Cambridge staff and students as an opportunity to explore, learn, and contribute towards a shared understanding about the impact of awarding gaps on Black undergraduate students. It is also a chance to reflect and critically engage on strategies and practices to address inequitable educational experiences at Cambridge, including the range of decolonisation initiatives already underway across the university. We welcome your views, ideas, and questions to help the University move forward in a mutually beneficial way.

The programme is being co-coordinated and co-designed by a team of student and staff researchers involved in the Access and Participation Plan’s Participatory Action Research (the APP PAR Project). The forum is supported by the Black Advisory Hub, the BME Campaign, and the Cambridge Centre for Teaching and Learning.

An applied introduction to probabilistic modelling, machine learning and artificial intelligence-based approaches for students with little or no background in theory and modelling. The course will be taught through a series of case studies from the current literature in which modelling approaches have been applied to large datasets from chemistry and biochemistry. Data and code will be made available to students and discussed in class. Students will become familiar with python based tools that implement the models though practical sessions and group based assignments.

These Portuguese reading courses are designed for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Latin American, Brazilian, Portuguese or Lusophone language, culture and heritage.

They offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce critical readings and interpretations.

The classes are going to be conducted primarily in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for oral and listening practice. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Portuguese.

The Basic course does not require any knowledge of the language while the prerequisite for the Intermediate course is a CEFR A2 level. The courses offer the possibility of progression and Basic students are strongly encouraged to continue with the Intermediate course.

Please note that these courses are attended by a number of very able, Spanish speaking students of Latin American studies and that the class dynamics are likely to be fast paced. For the rest of the students this might be challenging but also very rewarding and conducive to sound progress.

The courses will start from a Basic level and will aim at:

  • Solidifying strategies of reading of academic texts;
  • Recognition of the compositional structures of the texts;
  • Recognition of basic use of Portuguese grammar units The students will be asked to perform weekly readings of a wide variety of texts.

Alongside that, they will be requested to do grammar exercises related to the basic structures of the language, such as verbs and their complements.

The Finance Division is relaunching its staff review and development cycle and would like to invite you to a short webinar as a useful refresher about the overall purpose and outcomes of SRD and an opportunity to consider what you can do to help ensure an effective discussion as reviewee and/or reviewer. We have organised these knowledge bite sessions for both reviewer and reviewee and will go through the process and how you can prepare for the appraisal meetings.

If you are unable to attend either of these sessions it will be recorded so you can watch as a later date.

We also plan on holding several Q&A drop in sessions where you will be able to drop in and ask a questions if you have any.

With effect from August 2022 CULP Advanced level students will be included in the population for the HESA student return. We obtain much of the information required via the annual student registration exercise. CULP students, who are not currently following another course of study, will receive an email inviting them to complete Registration. At the start of the student registration process there is further information about the data collection for statutory purposes and the relevant privacy notices from the University and HESA.

The Programme offers general language tuition with a focus on communicative competence.

At advanced level the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme. While the grammar is analysed within a context, explicit grammar instruction becomes an integral part of the course.

One of the aims of the advanced level courses is also presentation skills as the courses aim to cater to the academic needs (i.e. research, conferences) of the students.

The concept underpinning this course is one of fostering the learning of higher Advanced German language through listening (mainly films), reading (mainly literature), speaking and writing (both film and literature).

Every session will offer a choice of extracts either from the German* literary canon or from critically acclaimed films, or indeed both, which illustrate the session’s theme. These passages will be analysed by means of listening, reading and communicative exercises and will lead to a discussion about their aesthetic, wider cultural, historical and political implications and relevance today.
