Are you migrating from Hermes to Exchange Online and are using Outlook 365 desktop as your client for the first time? If so join us in this friendly, introductory session to learn how to get up and running with Outlook 365 Email and Calendar using the Desktop application for Windows, where we will take you through the basics of the Outlook 365. This course does not cover the Hermes migration tool or in-depth technical questions regarding Outlook and Exchange. For this information please see the Further Information for IT staff webpages. Please Note: It is important that when you book on this course, on your booking confirmation page, click on Add to Calendar to start the process to import the course appointment into your calendar. This class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts: The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc. The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate. Collaboration can be one of the most rewarding aspects of a research career: bringing exciting perspectives and opportunities, enhanced productivity, access to resources and enduring relationships. It can also lead to some of our biggest challenges as we collaborate between disciplines, cultures, languages and hierarchies. This session will be presented by Dr Tracey Stead, a leadership coach and facilitator specialising in working with researchers and facilitating the formation and development of research collaborations. Over the last 12 years she has worked with hundreds on researchers and research groups to write guidance on research collaborations, coach research leaders, facilitate research sandpits and networking events, and establish new and review existing collaborations. In this interactive session, Tracey will share lessons learnt from the many researchers she has worked with, who have had both positive and negative experiences of collaboration. What do they wish they had known or done at the beginning? What advice would they give? How do they manage things now? The session will have two parts: A talk that will introduce advice and ideas on: Finding and making yourself visible to potential collaborators Establishing a collaborative relationship: what needs to be agreed? Keeping a collaboration on track and performing well An opportunity for you to ask your own questions about research collaboration in a 45 min Q&A. |

Methods Workshop: Best Practices in Coding for Digital Humanities Mary Chester-Kadwell (CDH Methods Fellow) Please note this workshop has limited spaces and an application process in place. Application forms should be completed by Tuesday, 11 May 2021. Successful applicants will be notified by end-of-day Wednesday, 12 May 2021. This course introduces best practices and techniques to help you better manage your code and data, and develop your project into a usable, sustainable, and reproducible workflow for research. Developing your coding practice is an ongoing process throughout your career. This intermediate course is aimed at students and staff who use coding in research, or plan on starting such a project soon. We present an introduction to a range of best practices and techniques to help you better manage your code and data, and develop your project into a usable, sustainable, and reproducible workflow. All the examples and exercises will be in Python. If you are interested in attending this course, please fill in the application form. Places will be prioritised for students and staff in the schools of Arts & Humanities, Humanities & Social Sciences, libraries and museums. This online course is geared towards non-native speakers who feel that they would benefit from the opportunity to have frequent practice in giving presentations in English. It will consist of a mix of teacher input, individual presentations and regular feedback. We will meet together for the first class (11.15am on Wednesday 28 April), and thereafter we will meet mainly in small groups of 4-6 students, at 11.15 am on either Wednesday or Thursday mornings. Depending on exact numbers, each group session will be between 1 hour and 1.5 hours long. Groups and precise times will be decided in the first class.

Referencing where you got ideas and inspiration from for your research is a core skill for any good researcher. In this session, you will be shown handy tools, such as the reference manager Zotero, that can do a lot of the hard work for you as well as managing your literature and reading throughout your research and beyond. The session will also give some tips on how to avoid being caught out through bad referencing techniques as well as the University of Cambridge's approach to plagiarism. We will use a combination of live demonstrations, discussions and quizzes to help you apply your knowledge and get to grips with your referencing needs! |

This series of drop in sessions has been designed to support both mentees and mentors who are taking part in the ourcambridge self-match mentoring scheme. They are entirely optional and you can attend as many or as few as you would like. To ensure that everyone is able to contribute to the sessions we are limiting the number of places for each session to 20. Where sessions are specifically designed for either the mentees or the mentors, this will be made clear (if you are both, you are welcome to attend both). The sessions will be interactive and focus around key discussion topics. For some sessions, we may contact you and ask you to watch a short 5-10 minute film beforehand. These Portuguese reading courses are designed for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Latin American, Brazilian, Portuguese or Lusophone language, culture and heritage. They offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce critical readings and interpretations. The classes are going to be conducted primarily in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for oral and listening practice. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Portuguese. The Basic course does not require any knowledge of the language while the prerequisite for the Intermediate course is a CEFR A2 level. The courses offer the possibility of progression and Basic students are strongly encouraged to continue with the Intermediate course. Please note that these courses are attended by a number of very able, Spanish speaking students of Latin American studies and that the class dynamics are likely to be fast paced. For the rest of the students this might be challenging but also very rewarding and conducive to sound progress. The courses will start from a Basic level and will aim at:
