This session introduces the theory and practice of budgeting, looking at why and how budgets can be set. Group exercises are used to prompt discussion around the types of costs that should be included in a budget and decision making when setting budgets. The session will give an overview of the budgeting process in the university and then focus in more detail on practical tools for day-to-day budgeting. Note: This session does not cover the detailed budgeting and rules relating to individual research grants. |
This course provides a practical introduction to the writing of Python programs for the complete novice. Participants are lead through the core concepts of Python including Python syntax, data structures and reading/writing files. These are illustrated by a series of example programs. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to write simple Python programs. This workshop will focus on the core steps involved in calling variants from Illumina next generation sequencing data using the Genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK). You will learn about best practices in calling somatic variants: single nucleotide variants (SNVs), short insertion/deletions (indels) and copy number variants (CNVs). We will also cover considerations to take when calling variants on the mitochondrial genome, as well as variant calling from bulk and single-cell RNA-seq data. We will also cover how the data structures provided by GATK can help you process large datasets in parallel and at scale. Although this workshop focuses on human data, the majority of the concepts and approaches apply to non-human data, and we will cover some adaptations needed in those situations. The training room is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access available to this level. Cognos is a reporting tool that utilises data from CUFS to provide users with additional reports and options. This introductory course is designed for new reporters - covering everything from running a report successfully as well as a number of useful tips and shortcuts. Note: This course is mandatory in order to attend either of the following two courses below. What this introductory course does not do is go through in detail the outputs of each individual report. Report outputs are explained in further detail in the courses above. Cannot make any dates? See the on-demand online version of the course. Completion of this course will count as Cognos attendance for the purpose of acceptance onto the above courses. Anyone who is or will be a first-time user or supervisor of x-ray equipment or other equipment generating ionising radiation is expected to attend this course before they begin work. Existing users and supervisors of these items of equipment who are new to the University should also attend. |

The Postgraduate Funding Project is working towards a big release in the Funding Management Portal in June 2023 and this roadshow will give colleagues an overview of the changes and benefits they can expect following the release. The roadshow will include contributions by the project’s sponsors, Prof Bhaskar Vira, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education, and Mike Nicholson, Deputy Head of Education Services, situating the project’s work in the context of the University’s wider strategic aims and highlighting the positive impact it will have for both applicants and staff who engage with the system. Engaging young people with your research can be very worthwhile and rewarding. This training session will support you with your public engagement work with schools by introducing you to the UK school system and discussing how public engagement work can fit with existing school priorities. We will consider ways in which your work can make an impact and briefly consider how public engagement can work with underrepresented groups and contribute to diversity and inclusion initiatives. You’ll be introduced to ways in which the University already works with schools to provide you with ideas for collaboration. Lastly, we’ll begin to think about how to plan and design activities suitable for school audiences. At the end of this session, you’ll hopefully feel more confident about how to work effectively with schools and can start thinking about your own public engagement work. The group session will be followed by the opportunity for a one-to-one 15-minute session with the trainer where you can discuss your projects, ideas and questions and get project specific help. This course will be led by Diogo Martins Gomes. Diogo is a Public Engagement and Communications Manager at the University of Cambridge with experience of working in the higher education industry. |

This training is intended for staff and post graduate students who regularly use DSE to help prevent or reduce the risk of possible health problems arising from computer use. The training is also aimed at those responsible within departments for assisting with the DSE risk assessment process. The course will provide an understanding of the DSE Regulations 1992 (as amended 2002) and discuss employer's and employee's duties regarding the assessment of DSE workstations. There will be theory and a practical demonstration. The training will allow time to discuss some of the common health problems and concerns that may be associated with poor workstation set-up with examples of possible solutions. |

Our online retreats give you time, peace, and space to think and write.
