A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Simplifying our Processes team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

Communicating clearly and being engaging can be challenging in any work environment. Doing so remotely can be even more difficult. Whether you’re teaching, leading meetings or preparing for an interview, this session will provide you with constructive feedback and tips to refine your speaking style, get your points across, and increase your personal impact. Coaching will “zoom in” on the areas you need to focus on, address any concerns you may have about your communication skills, and help you shape and deliver your message with clarity and confidence.

Participants may also find it useful to complete the Presentation Skills online module

Engaged Researcher Online - Shooting And Editing Your Research Video (4 of 6) Finished 10:00 - 12:15 Phoenix 2, Phoenix Building, New Museums Site

Why is YouTube popular? Because people love watching videos. A research video can be a great way to get your message across to your collaborators, your friends, and the wider world as well as being a condition of some funding bodies.

But it isn't easy to do well - and this is where this course will make a difference. Come along and learn the skills needed to plan, shoot & edit high quality footage for research videos so that your video can stand out from the crowd. You just need yourself, a camera phone and your enthusiasm!

You will have the opportunity for a one-to-one 30-minute session with the trainer where you can discuss your ideas and questions and get project specific help.

The course will be led by Ryd Cook. Ryd is a multi award winning film director, actor and mentor. His fiction and documentary films have screened in film festivals around the world. He has 15+ years of experience, filming, editing and producing a range of films. He has also been teaching practical filmmaking for over 10 years for all ages. He currently works as a director, cameraperson, actor and mentor.

Engaged Researcher Online - Introduction To Public Engagement (3 of 3) Finished 10:00 - 12:30 Phoenix 2, Phoenix Building, New Museums Site

We’ll be looking at the what, why and how of public engagement and introducing researchers to some of the ways to plan an effective public engagement project.

Topics:

  • The what: definitions of public engagement, who are the public, what activities count as engagement, what are the goals?
  • The why: University commitment to PE, REF, Funders
  • The how: the Logic Model approach to planning PE, practical considerations, moving engagement online and opportunities at the University.

This course will be led by Dr Lucy Spokes, the Head of Public Engagement. The group session will be followed by the opportunity for a one-to-one 15-minute session where you can discuss your projects, ideas and questions and get project specific help. This individual optional session can be booked either with Lucy or with Dr Selen Etingu-Breslaw, the Public Engagement and Impact Manager (Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences and Technology).

Engaged Researcher Online - Research Storytelling Masterclass new (3 of 3) Finished 10:00 - 11:00 Phoenix 2, Phoenix Building, New Museums Site

Practical extension of the Research Storytelling theory session to put knowledge into practice with your own research. This includes individual coaching, peer mentoring sessions, and a final showcase session which also looks at the next steps to take these stories further. Attendees must have already attended the Research Storytelling Introduction session or the Research Storytelling course delivered in the past years. 20-min one-to-one sessions with the trainer on 20 or 21 October must be booked directly with the trainer.

The course will be led by Sarah Cruise. Sarah is passionate about the art and science of communication and eloquential is her rattle bag of knowledge, skills and experience which she uses to train, coach and facilitate. Sarah collects research from areas such as psychology and neuroscience, along with practitioners experience from the performing arts to fill her bag of tricks, tips and advice. Sarah has been involved in public engagement training since 2006, working closely with Cambridge University. She is also a peripatetic teacher of communication and performance skills in schools and a co-presenter on the Gin & Topic podcast.

Interactive Induction: Beat the UL Challenge new Finished 10:00 - 11:00 Cambridge University Library: Entrance Hall

Do you have what it takes to beat the UL? Assemble a team to take on the challenge!

A self-led Library induction with a difference! Solve a series of puzzles which will lead you all over the UL, while teaching yourself to navigate the building and our physical collections. Have fun, learn how to use the UL and you will receive a small prize on completion!

Teams of up to 6 players can participate - if you want to play with your friends you'll need to make sure you all sign up to the same session. All players must be registered users of the University Library.

Want to make it even more interesting? Let our staff know on the day if you would like to be timed for a chance to top our Beat the UL leaderboard! You can complete the challenge as many times as you like, but only your first attempt will be timed!

SCM & SBS Assessors' Training Session - PG Funding Competition new Finished 10:30 - 11:45 Online Live Training

This year the training sessions are being run in School pairings for the Postgraduate Funding Competition. The session for Assessors will focus on the scoring matrix and the session for Administrators will focus on TOAST. This session is for the Schools of Clinical Medicine and the Biological Sciences.

All sessions will have a similar format so you may join a different School's session if the timing is more convenient. Administrators may also join the Assessors' session and vice versa if it would be useful.

All sessions will be recorded and available to view on the PG funding moodle site afterwards.

PLEASE NOTE: This course is PRIMARILY FOR CLASSICISTS.

This weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts:

The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc.

The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate.
