The course is designed to give participants an overview of Lean thinking as applied within Higher Education, and an explanation of some of the basic tools used to make improvements to processes. This session will focus on how to break down a problem and work towards a justifiable and confident decision to achieve the best outcome you can. |

Publishing a protocol -- stating in advance the search strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria, data analysis and other evaluative techniques -- is a core requirement for conducting a systematic review. The process of writing this protocol will also mean you have written in advance a large chunk of what will need to go into the finished systematic review, saving you a huge amount of time. This session will cover the contents and types of information you will need to provide in your protocol, and will give attendees the opportunity to write a draft protocol, as well as highlighting helpful resources and further support. UPDATE: Please note that this session is taking place remotely, not in the Medical Library as previously advertised. Please do not go to the Medical Library training room. Each of the Cambridge Colleges has been provided with an Excel-based spreadsheet, which enables the College to develop its own Science Based Target (SBT) for carbon reduction. The purpose of this training is to explain what data needs to be added to the tool, and how to do this, in order to generate the target. The training will also provide a brief introduction to SBTs, and demonstrate how each College can produce their 2019/20 carbon emissions report using the tool. The trainer is Chris Tuppen from Advancing Sustainability Limited. The training is being delivered via Microsoft Teams. There are 3 sessions available, these are identical sessions so please only book on ONE session |

We are running a series of focus groups to gain a better understanding of the entrepreneurship and enterprise landscape at Cambridge for STEMM postgraduates. We welcome everyone to come along and share their experiences and thoughts about this subject with us. Whether you have previously gained entrepreneurship and enterprise experience or thought this is an area to build on as part of your post graduate training, your contribution to these sessions would be most valuable. This session will be held online via zoom. Joining instructions will be sent to participants two days before the scheduled focus group. |

This event introduces participants to the KNIME Analytics Platform, an open source data science platform with a visual workflow editor, that can be used by users without prior programming experience or integrated with existing scripts written in R or Python. These sessions are aimed towards anyone who has an interest in building data science workflows with different kinds of life science data. The sessions will cover how to aggregate data from different sources (e.g., files, databases, web services), how to calculate simple statistics (e.g., for data exploration), network mining (e.g., protein-protein interactions) and big data analytics (e.g., next-generation sequencing data). The webinar will combine practical and taught content to demonstrate how users can use KNIME to design and utilise reproducible data science workflows, such as analytics tasks, and better explore and understand their data. Anyone who is a first-time user of unsealed radioactive substances is expected to attend this acquaintanceship course before they begin the work. Users of radioactive substances who are new to the University should also attend. This course also acts as a refresher for experienced users and for users from other institutions or countries. There will be time for discussion and questions at the end of the session, and a self-assessment exercise of attendees’ core knowledge will be carried out. |

The Transkribus Guided Project

We introduce the Transkribus software system that can be taught to read handwriting from images of documents and rapidly convert it into useful digital formats. This guided course provides basic training by practical immersion in this software, which requires only basic IT skills. Transkribus was developed by READ under the Horizon 2020 funding framework and is now a co-operative. It had 20,000+ users in 2019, and is becoming a standard research tool for mass transcription of archival sources. Participants will transcribe anonymised data from pre-loaded scans of forms filled out for the French national census of 1999 in Transkribus's downloadable software interface. These manual transcriptions will help train a handwritten text recognition (HTR) model to automatically transcribe many more of these forms later. In fact, the model will eventually allow the creation of one of the largest data sets ever attempted from manuscript sources. This course is a collaboration with Transkribus and Cambridge Digital Humanities. It is funded by a Cambridge Humanities Research Grant. |

One of the most important tasks of systems biology is to create explanatory and predictive models of complex biological systems. Availability of gene expression data in different conditions has paved the way for reconstructing direct or indirect regulatory connections between various genes and gene products. Most often, we are not interested in single interactions between gene products; instead, we try to reconstruct networks that provide insights into the investigated biological processes. This webinar will introduce the importance and applications of Gene Expression Datasets (Microarrays and RNA-Seq), followed by methods of extraction and analysis of Co-Expression Networks and Transcriptional Regulatory Networks from these datasets. The webinar will focus on the pros and cons of Weighted and Unweighted Networks, citing examples to aid decisions about which networks to use and when. The webinar will be presented in the form of a lecture and tutorial with screenshots that enable listeners to emulate the protocols in R. Note that this is a webinar and not a coding exercise. Attendees will learn how to search medical/healthcare databases accessed with a Raven login (such as Medline and Embase) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography. This course is delivered at an introductory/refresher level, and assumes you have had no prior training in how to search databases. All attendees are required to have a Raven login.
