This award winning virtually delivered course is intended to provide a strong foundation in practical statistics and data analysis using the R software environment. The underlying philosophy of the course is to treat statistics as a practical skill rather than as a theoretical subject and as such the course focuses on methods for addressing real-life issues in the biological sciences. There are three core goals for this course:
R is an open source programming language so all of the software we will use in the course is free. In this course, we explore classical statistical analysis techniques starting with simple hypothesis testing and building up to linear models and power analyses. The focus of the course is on practical implementation of these techniques and developing robust statistical analysis skills rather than on the underlying statistical theory. After the course you should feel confident to be able to select and implement common statistical techniques using R and moreover know when, and when not, to apply these techniques. Please note that if you are not eligible for a University of Cambridge Raven account you will need to book or register your interest by linking here. |

Web Recruitment Training - Managing Vacancies & Sending Correspondence (Live Online Using MS Teams)

This course covers viewing, processing and recording data for applications, adding notes and attachments, generating rejection emails, generating electronic reference requests, processing applicants through the selection process and transferring successful applicants to CHRIS. The system used is Web Recruitment.
Please note that the course is taught using Microsoft Teams and you must have Teams installed on your computer to participate. Data Champions Forum September 2022

This will be our third hybrid forum; please do join us if you can. The theme is RDM and Big Data. The forum will consist of programme updates, lightning talks and discussions on this topic, and chances to network with other Data Champions over lunch. The session after lunch will comprise the first in our Data Champion Training series. We will begin with 'Introduction to RDM, part I'. This training session (as well as part II in November) is aimed at Data Champions across disciplines and positions; aiming to give a solid up to date foundation understanding of RDM at Cambridge, and an idea of what you might talk about if you decide to do training sessons for your colleagues. Training will be presented by Dr Bea Gini, Training Coordinator in the Office of Scholarly Communication. The venue for this forum is the Faculty of Law Room B16 Sidgwick site. A vegetarian lunch will be provided. Please ensure you let us know of any dietary needs or intolerances by using the ‘Special requirements’ link in the invitation email. Places are limited for the live event, so please book as soon as possible. Equally, please cancel as soon as possible, should you no longer be able to attend. A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Simplifying our Processes team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys. Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions. The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand. |

Read and research in an East Asian language? Visit the UL’s Aoi Pavilion with over 300,000 volumes written in Japanese, Chinese, or Korean. You will see the East Asian Reading Room and Aoi bookstacks. You will learn how to find books in the open stacks and how to request them from closed stacks. This tour will include some main areas of the UL, but readers primarily interested in English or European collections should join an ‘Orientation Tour’ instead. |
