Medicine: SSC 1 — Answering your literature searching, referencing, and critical reading questions

This optional online drop-in session is a chance for students undertaking their SSC project to ask questions about, and gain further support in literature searching, critical appraisal and evaluation of medical research, and referencing. Those who have booked a place will be sent a link to join the online session several days before their scheduled session takes place. Please only book a place if you are currently undertaking your SSC block. Students in later blocks will have the chance to participate then. This session is aimed at students who have had no prior literature searching training before. Those who have some experience in literature searching should book instead on the SSC 2 drop in session. |

Inclusive Leadership Programme

This programme is designed to support academic, research and professional service leaders and managers with the skills and insights they need to lead others effectively. It will enable participants to reflect on their current leadership style and provide techniques they can use to effectively manage a diverse range of perspectives and create an inclusive culture across the University. Those with responsibility for others have a key role to play in shaping a positive working environment, supporting progression and ensuring equality, including pay equality. Given the University's strategic priorities, it is critical that leaders and managers understand the impact of their decisions throughout the employment timeline and know how to reduce the risk of sex, race or other discrimination, whether explicit or implicit. The programme is delivered in partnership with Pearn Kandola, experts in evidence-based inclusive leadership development. |

PLEASE NOTE that until further notice, due to the evolving situation with Coronavirus no courses will be offered as classroom based at the Training Facility. The Bioinformatics Team will be teaching the course live online in conjunction with the presenters. Many experimental designs end up producing lists of hits, usually based around genes or transcripts. Sometimes these lists are small enough that they can be examined individually, but often it is useful to do a more structured functional analysis to try to automatically determine any interesting biological themes which turn up in the lists. This course looks at the various software packages, databases and statistical methods which may be of use in performing such an analysis. As well as being a practical guide to performing these types of analysis the course will also look at the types of artefacts and bias which can lead to false conclusions about functionality and will look at the appropriate ways to both run the analysis and present the results for publication. Anyone who is or will be a first-time user or supervisor of x-ray equipment or other equipment generating ionising radiation is expected to attend this course before they begin work. Existing users and supervisors of these items of equipment who are new to the University should also attend. |
This is the first of two workshops designed to develop your understanding of the technicalities and the process of getting your research published. In this workshop, we examine the technical aspects of writing up your research in a format appropriate for publication. You will learn about the importance of following journal guidelines and house style, and the value of using a clear structure to frame your paper. You will also receive guidance on how to produce clear writing in a register appropriate for the readership. It is possible to attend this course as an individual workshop, although we would encourage you to attend the second workshop in the series Getting published II: Impact and Peer-review.

Referencing software is a great way for students to make the referencing process easier. But how much do you know about the different tools that are available? In this session, several demonstrations of popular referencing tools will be given in order to increase your knowledge and understanding of how they work, and help you troubleshoot if students come to you with queries. The demos will include Zotero, Mendeley and BiBTEX. Please bring a laptop or other personal device if you wish to follow along. |

Course will be delivered online. Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading Spanish documents that they have come across or may meet in their research. The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion. Classes will be conducted in English, but there will be many opportunities to use Spanish and practise reading aloud. For more detailed information about the course please visit our website. |

Cognos is a reporting tool that utilises data from CUFS to provide users with additional reports and options. This introductory course is designed for new reporters - covering everything from running a report successfully as well as a number of useful tips and shortcuts. Note: This course is mandatory in order to attend either of the following two courses below. What this introductory course does not do is go through in detail the outputs of each individual report. Report outputs are explained in further detail in the courses above. |

A webinar providing information on the level 4 Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship (duration 13months) presented by Glen Suttie of Provek, who are Project Management Training specialists and will deliver this apprenticeship. Aimed at developing the skills required to run successful projects. This programme consists of 6 modules, each of which have a 1x day workshop training included. You will also sit the Association for Project Management (APM) Project Management Qualification (PMQ) exam and will be externally assessed to achieve the Level 4 Associate Project Manager apprenticeship standard. The purpose of the webinar will be to provide you with an overview of the programme, and give you the opportunity to ask any questions.
