This is a training for those in Arts and Humanities. An introductory session looking at impact in the Arts and Humanities, offering a guide to call-outs for Impact projects from the School of Arts and Humanities. Impact is now a requirement for numerous grant applications, the REF, and academic life in general. It can make a useful and dynamic contribution to the long term development of many academic projects as well as bringing partnerships and funding opportunities. This session will discuss how impact is defined according to the AHRC and REF. It will also discuss previous successful impact projects, outline the connections between research and impact, funding strategies, and the differences between pathways to impact and impact objectives. Many different types of impact will be covered, including work with public policy, public engagement, the media, and commercialisation. |

Please note that the Conversation Hours will be delivered online This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2 level upwards) a chance to practise speaking French with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web-links, videos etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for interaction at advanced level. Participants from French Advanced CULP are warmly invited to attend the French Conversation Hour. The Fire Safety Awareness section (classroom based) will raise attendees' awareness of fire safety and assist fire safety managers to comply with current fire safety legislation. Use of Fire Extinguishers training (outdoor practical) provides hands on experience in the correct use of portable fire extinguishers. University staff working in embedded accommodation at Addenbrooke's Hospital should attend the NHS' fire training for its tenants. A course specifically for University of Cambridge staff and students. Attendees will learn how to search medical/healthcare databases accessed with a Raven login (such as Medline and Embase) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography. This course is delivered at an introductory/refresher level, and assumes you have had no prior training in how to search databases. All attendees are required to have a Raven login. NHS staff wanting to learn similar material should book onto our 'Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching' course instead. Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading French documents that they have come across or may meet in their research. The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion. This course is designed for learners who have very limited or no previous knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL). The course aims to enable individuals to understand and use BSL effectively for purposes of practical communication with deaf or hard of hearing people, to develop understanding of the BSL sentence syntax and to learn more about a Deaf Culture. Please note this course is not credit-bearing and so cannot be used as part of a Tripos. |

![]() With effect from August 2022 CULP Advanced level students will be included in the population for the HESA student return. We obtain much of the information required via the annual student registration exercise. CULP students, who are not currently following another course of study, will receive an email inviting them to complete Registration. At the start of the student registration process there is further information about the data collection for statutory purposes and the relevant privacy notices from the University and HESA. At an advanced level, the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. This intensive Persian course is designed particularly for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Persian language, culture and heritage. However the course can be equally useful for those who are interested in learning Persian for more general purposes. We offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce spoken and written language on variety of topics. The classes are going to be conducted more or less in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for speaking and listening practice in Persian. And the medium of class will swiftly change to Persian by the end of the term. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Persian and/or communicate in Persian with native speakers. |

These courses will not be formally assessed and students who attend regularly (12/15 sessions) will receive a Certificate of Attendance. CULP’s Introduction to Language and Culture Hebrew course, designed for absolute beginners, promises to offer a welcoming and exciting start to your Hebrew studies. Both spoken and written Modern Hebrew will be taught two hours per week during Michaelmas and Lent terms. You will be given the opportunity to express yourself, read and write in the target language, and develop your ability to understand native speakers. Realistic amounts of homework will be given and students will be encouraged to avail themselves of Hebrew media within the Language Centre.
