The course is designed to give participants an overview of the history and principles of the Lean methodology, and an explanation of some of the basic tools used to make improvements to processes. This CoP has been set up to create a space where people involved in running Cambridge masters programmes (directors, administrators, teachers, etc) can share ideas and good practice. Ideally, we will be able to help each other navigate the landscape of practice represented by our various roles within masters courses across the university. PGT CoP events will provide you with the opportunity to network with others working in this area and share practice, and support each other with common challenges. At this first event, we will introduce you to the founders of the PG Masters CoP, and find out what motivated them to set up the community and talk to them about their vision for the group going forward. We will then break in to smaller groups to get to know each other better, and identify areas of common interest, and potential topics to explore together at future events. |

This course provides a practical introduction to the writing of Python programs for the complete novice. Participants are lead through the core concepts of Python including Python syntax, data structures and reading/writing files. These are illustrated by a series of example programs. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to write simple Python programs. Please note that if you are not eligible for a University of Cambridge Raven account you will need to book or register your interest by linking here. |

This workshop will focus on the core steps involved in calling variants from Illumina next generation sequencing data using the Genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK). You will learn about best practices in calling somatic variants: single nucleotide variants (SNVs), short insertion/deletions (indels) and copy number variants (CNVs). We will also cover considerations to take when calling variants on the mitochondrial genome, as well as variant calling from bulk and single-cell RNA-seq data. We will also cover how the data structures provided by GATK can help you process large datasets in parallel and at scale. Although this workshop focuses on human data, the majority of the concepts and approaches apply to non-human data, and we will cover some adaptations needed in those situations. The training room is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access available to this level. Attendees will learn how to search medical/healthcare databases accessed with a Raven login (such as Medline and Embase) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography. This course is delivered at an introductory/refresher level, and assumes you have had no prior training in how to search databases. All attendees are required to have a Raven login. NHS staff wanting to learn similar material should book onto our 'Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching' course instead.
