This session will provide some basic tools that can be used immediately to facilitate a continuous improvement way of working

This course is accredited with the LCS (Lean Competency System), a certificate will be provided on completion of a short assessment.

This session provides an introduction for both mentors and mentees. We will discuss the benefits of mentoring and provide guidance on how to set objectives for the mentoring relationship and how to prepare for your first session together. We will also offer some tips about how to be a good mentee and mentor.

This individually focused and completely confidential one-to-one coaching session will help you refine your presentation skills, help you speak more confidently as an emerging leader in your research field, and develop new approaches to your communication in a wide range of professional situations.

Constructive feedback will give you insight into your speaking style, how you come across to others, and how well your ideas are communicated. Coaching will focus on your individual requirements ranging from practical points about elocution and vocal projection, to holding the attention of a room, to structuring a compelling presentation.

This CoP has been set up to create a space where people involved in running Cambridge masters programmes (directors, administrators, teachers, etc) can share ideas and good practice. Ideally, we will be able to help each other navigate the landscape of practice represented by our various roles within masters courses across the university.

PGT CoP events will provide you with the opportunity to network with others working in this area and share practice, and support each other with common challenges. At this first event, we will introduce you to the founders of the PG Masters CoP, and find out what motivated them to set up the community and talk to them about their vision for the group going forward. We will then break in to smaller groups to get to know each other better, and identify areas of common interest, and potential topics to explore together at future events.

Springboard: A Women's Development Programme (2 of 4) Finished 09:30 - 15:30 Hughes Hall, Pavilion Room


Springboard is a personal development programme for all female staff/graduate students. It will give you the opportunity to take stock and consider your personal and professional goals.

During the programme you will explore your future in a practical way and learn how to develop your potential. You will undertake realistic self-assessment and set challenging goals.

Key areas covered include communication skills, assertiveness, self confidence, improving your work/life balance and developing positive skills and attitude. If you want to progress and develop, then this programme is for you.

The programme comprises four days over a three-month period and a workbook to be completed between sessions.

Introduction to Python for Biologists (ONLINE LIVE TRAINING) (1 of 4) Finished 09:30 - 12:30 Bioinformatics Training Facility - Online LIVE Training

This course provides a practical introduction to the writing of Python programs for the complete novice. Participants are lead through the core concepts of Python including Python syntax, data structures and reading/writing files. These are illustrated by a series of example programs. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to write simple Python programs.

Variant Discovery with GATK4 (IN PERSON) (1 of 4) Finished 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Room, Craik-Marshall Building

This workshop will focus on the core steps involved in calling variants from Illumina next generation sequencing data using the Genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK). You will learn about best practices in calling somatic variants: single nucleotide variants (SNVs), short insertion/deletions (indels) and copy number variants (CNVs). We will also cover considerations to take when calling variants on the mitochondrial genome, as well as variant calling from bulk and single-cell RNA-seq data. We will also cover how the data structures provided by GATK can help you process large datasets in parallel and at scale. Although this workshop focuses on human data, the majority of the concepts and approaches apply to non-human data, and we will cover some adaptations needed in those situations.

The training room is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access available to this level.

10.30 - 11.00 - a presentation from Michelle Batty (HR Manager, Casual Worker Team) about CCWS, covering registration, making a booking and approving a timesheet with particular emphasis on undergraduate examiners and assessors.

11.00 - 12.00 - an opportunity for individual 1:1 support or questions with members of the HR Systems Helpdesk and Casual Worker HR Team

Medicine: Introduction to Literature Searching (for University) new Finished 14:00 - 16:00 Clinical School, Medical Library, Library Training Room

A course specifically for University of Cambridge staff and students. Attendees will learn how to search medical/healthcare databases accessed with a Raven login (such as Medline and Embase) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography. This course is delivered at an introductory/refresher level, and assumes you have had no prior training in how to search databases.

All attendees are required to have a Raven login. NHS staff wanting to learn similar material should book onto our 'Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching' course instead.
