A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Simplifying our Processes team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

Postdocs: Networking and Profile Building for Researchers (1 of 6) Finished 10:30 - 12:00 Online

This practical course on networking and research profile building offers participants the opportunity to learn effective tools for successfully growing and nurturing their networks and to put their skills into practice with researchers from other universities, as well as with a number of other guest professionals.

The six sessions (running in pairs on Tuesdays between 4th and 18th October) were designed to be complementary and are meant to be attended as a series. Visit this website for further details about the six sessions:

  • Session 1: Introduction to the principles of networking
  • Session 2: Building confidence to network and taking first steps
  • Session 3: Networking session hosted on Kumospace
  • Session 4: Collaboration & partnering
  • Session 5: Social media for networking (Twitter, LinkedIn)
  • Session 6: Wrap-up and guest speaker (new!)

This course was created as a collaboration between Queen’s University Belfast, Queen Mary University London, University of Cambridge, King’s College London, University of Nottingham, Imperial College London, University of Glasgow and University of Cardiff and postdocs will have the opportunity to network with early career researchers from across these institutions.

An Introduction to Undergraduate Supervision (Essay-Based Subjects) Finished 14:00 - 17:00 Student Services Centre, Exams Hall, Room AG03d


This course prepares you to supervise undergraduate students at the University of Cambridge in essay-based subjects. It explores the challenges and approaches involved in supervising undergraduates as well as providing practical advice and strategies.

The course consists of three components:

1. A pre-workshop self-paced module containing information on the Cambridge supervision system and introduces the principles and practices of effective teaching and learning.
2. An in-person workshop that incorporates personal reflection on teaching practice, design of learning activities, discussion of real teaching scenarios, a chance to discuss and ask questions and access to practical information about organising and carrying out your supervisions.
3. A post-workshop information pack containing additional resources for ongoing support and information

The training provided in this course complements any training you may receive from your department or college and is required by colleges before you can carry out supervisions.

Introduction to Cambridge University Libraries for Biological Sciences (Part II students) Finished 14:00 - 15:00 Cambridge University Libraries Online

This session will provide an overview of the support and resources available from the Biological Sciences Libraries Team, as well as other useful services from across the University of Cambridge, for undergraduate students taking their Part II year in a Biological Sciences subject. It will also provide an introduction to the various training opportunities on offer from library staff to help students with research projects and/or dissertations.

Please note that some Part II cohorts will have a timetabled induction so be sure to check your course handbooks or other information before booking a place. These sessions are for Part II students based in departments with reduced or no library staffing during Michaelmas Term.

Medicine: Introduction to Literature Searching (for University) new Finished 09:00 - 11:00 Clinical School, Medical Library, Library Training Room

A course specifically for University of Cambridge staff and students. Attendees will learn how to search medical/healthcare databases accessed with a Raven login (such as Medline and Embase) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography. This course is delivered at an introductory/refresher level, and assumes you have had no prior training in how to search databases.

All attendees are required to have a Raven login. NHS staff wanting to learn similar material should book onto our 'Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching' course instead.

Virtual - How to Excel - Part 3 (For Finance staff) Finished 09:30 - 12:30 Via MS Teams

The session will look at more advanced formulas and macros using the recorder and VBA tools.

The formulas covered in this course include SUMIF and COUNTIF which will allow the user to quickly summarise data.

Macros will enable the user to automate tasks within excel. During this session, we will use the example of needing to analyse, sort, split and send data to specific email contacts. Users will be introduced to a series of macros to reduce this process to a few simple steps.

The session will run on Teams and delegates must be able to access Excel during the session

These monthly meetings are for managers and leaders across the University to meet informally and talk about the successes and challenges of this part of their role. The meetings are for all those who are professionally responsible for others in the workplace, formally and informally.

The meeting may include a short update about the Network or opportunities for leaders and managers. Following that is the chance for smaller groups of colleagues to speak about current priorities and plans, and to feedback suggestions for the development of the Network, supported by PPD.

Laser Safety for Class 3B and 4 Laser Users and Research Supervisors Finished 14:00 - 16:30 Department of Biochemistry, Thomas Lecture Theatre

This course is an essential component of training for new laser users, which should be backed up by practical training in departments.

The course may be suitable for users of other classes of lasers, depending on the risk, but please discuss this with your Laser Safety Officer first.
